Modern industrial and chemical technologies have brought drastic changes to the field of food processing, providing us with a great deal of comfort and convenience in life. However, apart from unscrupulous food merchants using unprecedented large-scale substandard processing techniques to harm public health for their own profit, genetically modified (GM) foods, which have become popular in recent years, are also gradually infiltrating our lives.

Although GM foods may very well be the fuse that leads to humanity’s destruction in the future (a bit of alarmist talk here), the medical community probably doesn’t want to clash with the world’s four major grain conglomerates too soon. So, we might have to wait a while to see truly “sincere” research reports. But that’s a topic for another day. Today, I actually want to show everyone a photo:

This is a photo showing the tangible representation of the sugar content in beverages. The packets of white powder hanging below each can of drink aren’t some kind of drug (though they’re not far off), but rather the actual amount of sugar extracted from each beverage by a foreign research institute after processing.

It’s easy to notice the green-packaged drink on the far right, which looks very familiar. The amount of sugar in it takes up nearly half the bottle, making you wonder whether you’re drinking a beverage or just sugar!

It seems that, even though I rarely add sugar to my home-brewed coffee, food manufacturers have kindly made up for it by adding plenty of sugar to their products (looking at the scale). No wonder adults always told us not to eat McDonald’s or drink cola (mysterious voice: don’t cover your ears).

Currently, many international organizations have pointed out, based on research reports, that excessive sugar intake can cause significant harm to adolescents during their developmental years. Some even claim that consuming too much sugar is more harmful to health than smoking.

Studies indicate that excessive sugar intake can easily lead to insulin imbalances in the body, reducing the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels. Over time, this can lead to symptoms of diabetes. Alternatively, too much sugar can also weaken the immune system’s defenses, making the body more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections, causing even more severe health damage.

That said, for sugar-loving “ant people” or preschool kids, sugary drinks are as irresistible as marijuana is to hippies. It’s quite a challenge for adults to completely prevent kids from consuming too much sugar.

Even if we deliberately choose sugar-free drinks and foods, who knows what chemical additives are used to enhance sweetness just to keep sales figures looking good? These additives might even be worse than sugar!

Perhaps the only solution to keep ourselves and our families away from high sugar and excessive additives is to drink home-ground, home-brewed coffee or “old people’s tea” (mysterious voice: and beer, whiskey, red wine, vodka…). But in the end, tea leaves might contain excessive pesticide residues, and coffee beans might be mixed with spoiled ones by unscrupulous vendors… (*gets kicked*).

Finally, for more details on the health hazards of excessive sugar intake, Dr. Nancy Appleton from the U.S. provides a detailed explanation in her article, 146 Reasons Why Sugar Is Ruining Your Health. Interested readers can check it out for themselves. To put it simply, the widespread effects of consuming too much sugar might “only” lead to about 146 types of harm (*drifts away*).
