The author used to specialize in patent application services for the tech industry, frequently visiting industrial or science parks like Neihu, Nangang, Zhongli, Yangmei, and Hsinchu. Naturally, this led to casual chats and banter with newly acquainted friends in the IT sector.

Sometimes, when handling a large number of cases for the same company, the author would often meet with engineers to discuss work. If the vibe was right, conversations could dive deeper, and some even led to private hangouts for fun.

Occasionally, when chatting about family life, they’d jokingly say, “Because we’re exposed to tons of stray electromagnetic waves in our work environment, all our office colleagues only give birth to girls.”

What’s curious is that this “joke” didn’t seem entirely like a joke, as surprisingly many friends had mentioned the same thing.
Later, many domestic companies started emulating foreign firms, emphasizing welfare policies (especially during the period when engineers were jumping ship en masse). These companies particularly focused on boosting fertility-related benefits (in line with the government’s pro-natalist policies). As a result, many couples struggling with infertility flocked to hospitals to try IVF.
However, this company welfare policy seemed to spark another “half-joking” rumor: “Now, employees in the IT tech industry are really good at having twins.”

Hmmm… If this trend continues, with a high proportion of girls being born first, followed by the advantage of having two or more babies at once, could Taiwan eventually become the legendary “Daughter Island Nation”!?

It seems like boys in the future will be in luck, as Taiwan’s gender ratio might become severely imbalanced. (October 2016 update: It’s already imbalanced, with the male-to-female infant sex ratio reaching 1.083.)

Well, as long as it’s not the kind of “Women’s Kingdom” that Sanji encountered at sea in One Piece (big mistake).
