以英語為母語且教育程度高的人，普遍認識的單字量高達約15000個。而我國初中生只要背熟1200字就足以應付升學考試需求，3000字則能應付日常生活與職場英語會話需求，且能自由閱讀九成的英語報章雜誌。
雖然有些人會說背單字沒有用處，或許對了一半，但那是指你已經記憶超過5000字以後才有資格談的。擴充單字量永遠是最快速達到學習英語的方法，之後才是如何讓自己跟那些單字更加熟稔，但是要如何背誦又是另外一門學問了。
筆者自己在學習英語過程，發現直接背誦單字是效果最直接的方法，但是與其花時間記憶一大堆雜亂單字，不如將最常用的3000單字背誦下來，其他生字自然可以透過前後文聯想、發問或查字典等方式認識新單字。
因此接下來的26篇文章，會將以A到Z字母開頭的常用單字分別表列出來。
如果可以列印在A4紙上更好，已經認識的單字直接塗抹掉，留下不認識的生字，之後再反覆背誦生字。如此一來就能有效率的透過系統化學習，讓自己記憶所有英語單字。
