I received an email beginning with: “Hey Jinliang Lin, I hope you’re doing okay in all the commotion we’re dealing with right now. I really enjoyed your style, so I just thought I’d try to connect. It would really be awesome to see you sport T-post, the world’s first wearable magazine. So, if you like our brand, just email me right back and I can hook you up with a free shirt/magazine that is fully reversible, so you can try it out for real.”

It went on to say how much they appreciated style and wanted to invite me to wear T-post, which they claimed to be “the world’s first wearable magazine.” At first, a hint of self-deprecating humor came to mind: had J. LIN Studio’s artistic style finally been recognized by the world?

But not so fast—what seemed like a dream brand collaboration was actually hiding a subscription trap.

What Is T-post?

T-post is a Swedish brand founded in 2004, known for releasing limited-edition T-shirts that combine story content with design. Each shirt features a full story printed on the inside and artistic designs on the outside, turning the wearer into a “walking story.” The brand has been praised by publications like The Wall Street Journal and Time Magazine, giving it a certain cultural credibility.

Free Trial? Sounds Too Good to Be True?

Many artists, designers, or trend enthusiasts may receive similar invitation emails, where the sender expresses admiration for their style and offers a free T-post T-shirt to “try out” this concept product. It sounds generous, but here’s what many people discovered after signing up:

✅ The first T-shirt is indeed free and shipped to your door.

❌ However, signing up quietly binds you to a €32/month (about $35) subscription.

❌ If you don’t proactively cancel, you’ll receive new T-shirts every month, and your card will be charged automatically.

❌ Users have reported that the cancellation process is cumbersome and that it’s difficult to find the correct contact method.

This pattern is what we call the “free trial → automatic subscription” trap.

How to Avoid Falling into the Trap?

  • Stay Alert: Whether it’s T-post or another brand, be cautious when a “free trial” offer requires you to provide credit card or payment details.
  • Read the Fine Print: Don’t let excitement distract you from the small print at the bottom of the registration page mentioning “automatic renewal.”
  • Check Brand Reviews: Search for the brand name on Reddit, Trustpilot, or other forums. Many users have shared similar experiences with T-post on Reddit.
  • If You’ve Already Signed Up: Contact [email protected] immediately to state that you do not wish to continue the subscription after receiving the first T-shirt to avoid automatic charges.

Conclusion: The Cost of Being “Noticed”

Perhaps the sincere tone of the email sparked a bit of emotion, even a sense of being finally recognized for your unique style. But behind the curtain was a “free trial” money trap. This wasn’t about your art being noticed—it was about the cost of “being noticed.” Art deserves recognition, but it also demands vigilance.
