The New York Times recently published an article titled “Restaurants Turn Camera Shy,” which could be considered quite a damning report for many food bloggers. The article points out that some restaurants in New York have begun prohibiting photography inside their establishments, with more and more restaurants following suit.

According to the investigation, the main reason for this phenomenon is that restaurant operators have started to realize how unwelcome some diners’ photography habits are. Beyond serving delicious food, restaurants are judged on their ambiance, decor, and service quality. However, operators have noticed that when some diners photograph their food in dimly lit settings (designed for a cozy atmosphere), they often resort to using flash to compensate for low light, inadvertently blinding nearby patrons.

It’s not just amateur photographers doing this—some skilled photographers, aware of the importance of lighting, also become inconsiderate in their pursuit of the perfect shot, turning into what others might perceive as jerks. Moreover, when you’re dining and someone nearby starts acting like a circus clown, awkwardly snapping photos of their food, it’s bound to draw attention, even if they’re only photographing their own table. For many chefs, this is an unforgivable offense, as they never imagined someone would dare disrupt the sublime enjoyment of their carefully crafted dishes.

For other diners, who are simply there to enjoy their meal, the constant worry that the person at the next table might be a paparazzo ruins their dining experience. Other reasons include some chefs’ prideful attitudes, like, “Who are you to critique my cuisine?” or their belief that your photography skills only tarnish their creations. These stubborn quirks of chefs are, in a way, quite endearing.

It’s not just chefs or fellow diners who take issue with food photography—sometimes even friends or family members criticize the practice. They might complain that a perfectly prepared dish is ready to be enjoyed, but they have to wait for you to finish taking photos, which feels unnecessary and tedious (laughs).

From a legal perspective, as long as restaurants clearly inform customers of their policies in advance, I fully support and respect their right to prohibit photography. However, restaurant operators must ensure they communicate these rules effectively from the start. No one likes being told, “Hey, sorry, I have to restrict your freedom,” while they’re enjoying something they love—it’s no surprise that this can lead to disputes.

As someone who enjoys photographing food, I believe in a “go with the flow” and natural approach. The key is simple: be mindful and don’t disturb others. Some people seem oblivious, going so far as to practically climb onto others’ tables to get the perfect angle, and I’m genuinely impressed by their shamelessness. If I’m not on a food photography assignment, I’d rather avoid the hassle and judgmental stares, which often result in imperfect photos anyway, and focus instead on savoring the joy of the meal.

To wrap up, I’d like to share a quote from Jane Goodall for everyone to reflect on regarding our relationship with food: “Humans value eating because there are fewer meaningful things left in life.”
