Pi (π) – The Mathematical Constant
Pi, also known as Zu’s Ratio in Chinese and denoted by the Greek letter “π,” is defined as the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. As a fundamental mathematical constant frequently encountered in mathematics and physics, it serves as a crucial parameter for precisely calculating geometric quantities such as circumference, area, and spherical volume.
Pi is an irrational number with infinite non-repeating decimals. The earliest documented concept of pi dates back to a Babylonian stone tablet from 1900 BCE (Figure 1), which explicitly records pi as 25/8 (3.125).
Later, the Chinese mathematician Zu Chongzhi of the Southern and Northern Dynasties derived a remarkably accurate fractional approximation of pi: 355/113. When calculated, this “dense ratio” yields 3.141592920353982, closely approaching the true value of pi.
The Fascination with Calculating Pi
Throughout history, enthusiasts across various fields have pursued the computation of pi’s digits. As of 2011, the world record holder was a Japanese computer engineer who calculated pi to an astonishing 10 trillion decimal places, requiring approximately 32 terabytes of storage[1].

The New Pi: Tau (τ)
In recent years, some mathematicians have challenged the conventional use of pi, arguing that its historical definition is a misapplication that complicates mathematical learning. They propose that the true “circle constant” should be Tau (τ), defined as 2π (6.283185…).
Advocates of tau, symbolized by the Greek letter “τ,” have even established June 28 (6/28) as “Tau Day” to promote its adoption.
Dr. Kevin Houston, a mathematics lecturer at the University of Leeds, explains: “Pi (π) is not the most natural number associated with circles. While it appears in formulas for circumference and area, many fundamental equations—such as those in trigonometry and calculus—are more elegantly expressed using tau. Adopting tau would simplify concepts like radians and enhance clarity in advanced mathematics.”
