Once absent from remote forests and wilderness trails, feral cats are now appearing across wild habitats. An in-depth investigation into how blanket feeding bans dismantled town TNR programs, pushing urban strays into fragile natural ecosystems and igniting an ecological crisis.

As dusk settled along a remote mountain road far from urban bustle, the headlights of a passing vehicle swept across dense scrubland. From deep within the tangled briars, a pair of cold, luminescent green eyes stared back with piercing vigilance.

It was neither a civet nor a native leopard cat—it was a rugged, muscular domestic tabby cat.

A decade ago, such a sighting would have been virtually unthinkable. For generations, these secluded hilltops, peripheral woodlands, and remote scrublands were completely devoid of domestic felines. Yet recently, field naturalists, hikers, and ecological surveyors have all noted a chilling trend: **the sighting frequency of cats deep in wild and semi-wild habitats is escalating at an unprecedented pace.**

This is no whimsical wildlife anomaly. It is the direct consequence of human arrogance—a catastrophic **ecological backfire** triggered by well-intentioned but fundamentally flawed policies that ignored the basic laws of animal behavior and population ecology.

---

## 1. A Prophecy Fulfilled: When Cities Lose Anchor Points, Strays Turn Feral

In our previous analytical essays on urban street cats, we dissected the core behavioral logic of urban felines: cats are intensely territorial creatures. As long as they maintain a stable shelter and consistent caloric supply within their neighborhood home range, they will rarely migrate, let alone trek dozens of kilometers into remote wilderness to hunt.

Traditionally, stray cats clustered in heavily modified anthropogenic landscapes—asphalt back-alleys, historic marketplaces, and dense residential blocks. In these artificial urban environments, native wildlife was extirpated decades ago by human bulldozers. The only organisms cohabiting these concrete niches with humans were brown rats, black rats, and feral pigeons.

However, in recent years, certain vocal groups driven by extreme civic hygiene ideals—waving banners of "wildlife preservation" and "urban aesthetic order"—lobbied aggressively for sweeping bans on public feeding and the total eradication of street cats.

Policy-makers and extreme activists naively assumed that by passing punitive ordinances and issuing fines against compassionate feeders, stray cats would vanish into thin air like deleted computer files.

**Reality proved far harsher: living animals do not evaporate.**

When administrative decrees brutally severed all urban caloric sources, starving animals did not passively perish. Deprived of their traditional habitat and driven away by hostile enforcement, urban **stray cats** followed green corridors, drainage ditches, and roadside verges outward into peripheral woodlands, shedding their docility and morphing into hardened, solitary **feral cats**.

---

## 2. The Collapse of TNR: From Controlled Hotspots to Untraceable Wild Vectors

Opponents of feeding frequently argue that "cutting off food will cause stray cats to naturally disappear." This myth blatantly ignores population dynamics and the hard-won realities of frontline animal welfare volunteers.

In any effective management framework, **consistent, managed feeding stations are the indispensable cornerstone of TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programs:**

- **Establishing Trust & Routines**: Scheduled feeding anchors feline routines, enabling volunteers to accurately census every cat in a district, identify pregnant queens, and spot unsterilized newcomers.
- **Maximizing Trap Efficacy**: Hunger schedules ensure humane box traps function with high success rates.
- **Disease Surveillance & Vaccination**: Sick individuals can be promptly captured for veterinary treatment and vaccination, preventing zoonotic outbreaks.

Even under high-intensity volunteer trapping, a few trap-shy individuals inevitably slip through the cracks. In the past, however, these few unneutered cats remained confined to specific alleyways where volunteers could continually monitor and re-target them.

When governments issue blanket feeding bans and penalize caretakers, the predictable result is the **total collapse of local TNR frontlines.**

| Management Paradigm | Feline Home Range | Population Monitoring | TNR Feasibility | Threat to Native Wildlife |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Managed Feeding Stations** | Anchored to paved alleys & plazas | High precision via volunteer censuses | Concentrated & highly effective | Negligible (confined to artificial niches) |
| **Blanket Bans & Hostile Expulsion** | Dispersed into forests & rural hills | Untraceable ghost populations | Virtually impossible across wild terrain | **Severe (direct predation on native fauna)** |

Forced into the wilderness, unsterilized "trap-shy" cats find refuge in overgrown orchards, ravines, and scrubland far beyond the reach of humane traps and volunteer patrols. Breeding unchecked in the wild, a single unneutered pair can spawn dozens of feral offspring within a few years, transforming an urban management challenge into an uncontrollable ecological black hole.

---

## 3. The Unintended Casualty: Fragile Wildlife Suffers a Devastating Blow

The supreme irony of this policy failure is the catastrophic toll inflicted upon the very wilderness it purported to safeguard.

Over recent decades, rising ecological awareness, reduced pesticide usage, and reforestation initiatives have allowed peripheral biodiversity to show delicate signs of recovery. In lowland hills, vulnerable ground-nesting birds, endemic skinks, native geckos, and small nocturnal mammals were finally gaining a foothold after decades of human encroachment.

Now, these fragile recovery zones face an unexpected super-predator: urban cats forced into the wild by human decree.

Even after millennia of domestication, the domestic cat retains one of the most efficient predatory nervous systems in the vertebrate kingdom. In urban alleys, a well-fed cat hunts largely out of play. In the wild, starving feral cats must hunt ruthlessly for basic survival:

1. **Devastation of Ground-Nesting Birds**: Native quail, francolins, and babblers nesting on the forest floor possess no evolutionary defenses against an ambush predator as agile as a cat.
2. **Decimation of Reptiles and Small Mammals**: Recovering populations of endemic lizards, skinks, and blind snakes face indiscriminate slaughter.
3. **Transmission of Zoonotic Pathogens**: Feral cats introduce pathogens such as *Toxoplasma gondii* into pristine watersheds and soils, directly threatening endangered native carnivores (such as leopard cats and civets).

Those who self-righteously demanded total feeding bans under the guise of "saving wildlife" never foresaw that **their blunt, punitive measures would dismantle the urban buffer zone, propelling top-tier predators straight into the heart of delicate natural ecosystems!**

---

## 4. The Price of Hubris: Dismantling Dynamic Urban Equilibriums

A modern city is an artificial ecosystem constructed by human hands.

Within this system, humans, rodents, street cats, food waste, and subterranean infrastructure have forged a delicate, functional equilibrium over generations:
- Street cats patrol residential alleys, their scent and territorial behavior suppressing subterranean rodent populations, acting as natural sentinels of municipal sanitation.
- Dedicated volunteers provide clean, managed rations, anchoring feline movements while conducting systematic sterilization and vaccination, keeping populations on a steady, humane decline.

This system was never pristine, but it was pragmatic, cost-effective, and remarkably resilient.

Unfortunately, modern urbanites accustomed to sanitized illusions cannot tolerate the presence of species they personally dislike. Disregarding biological behavior and ecological realities, they resort to punitive decrees—demanding fines, bans, and eradication.

This administrative hubris has yielded a lose-lose disaster:

> [!WARNING] The Cascading Domino Effect
> 1. **Cities Surrender to Rodents**: Deprived of feline scent deterrence, sewer rat empires explode within underground drainage networks, triggering public health hazards.
> 2. **Wilderness Ravaged by Feral Cats**: Displaced felines infiltrate lowland hills, converting hard-won wildlife conservation habitats into hunting grounds.

---

## Conclusion: The Urgent Need for Dynamic Ecological Wisdom

Looking into the wary eyes of a feral cat lurking in remote wilderness, we must confront an undeniable truth: nature operates not on moralistic slogans, but through intricately interconnected ecological networks.

A mature society does not chase the naive illusion of "instant elimination." It practices **dynamic equilibrium through precise management**. By restoring regulated, sanitary feeding stations, we anchor feline populations within wildlife-free urban boundaries where volunteers can systematically execute TNR and vaccination programs.

If policy-makers persist in being swayed by emotional purism and sweeping bans, the multiplying paw prints of feral cats across our wild hills will stand as an enduring monument to human folly.

Walking along Tamsui's Gongsitien Creek trail, conspicuous piles of raw white rice left on stone walls catch the eye. Well-intentioned as feeding may seem, does it truly help wildlife? We explore foraging behaviors of sparrows and doves, debunk the myth of bursting bird stomachs, and examine why refined white rice acts as avian junk food fueling ecological hazards.

A quiet morning stroll along the Gongsitien Creek trail in Tamsui offers a serene ecological corridor within the urban sprawl. Yet glancing toward the stone retaining walls, one is struck by an unnatural sight: neat, intentional mounds of raw white rice resting atop the flat stone surfaces.

This is no accidental spill. It is a calculated gesture of human benevolence aimed at giving local wild birds an easy feast. But observing these processed grains juxtaposed against riverside vegetation, an urgent question arises: **Does leaving piles of raw white rice actually benefit wild birds, or does it trigger unseen ecological harm?**

## Debunking Childhood Tropes: Do Wild Birds Actually Eat White Rice?

Many remember childhood cartoon scenes: propping up a basket with a stick tied to a string, scattering white rice beneath, and waiting to trap a curious sparrow—only for the attempt to fail repeatedly. This leads many to wonder: Do sparrows simply ignore uncooked rice, or do wild birds eat it at all?

The answer: **They certainly eat rice, but unforgiving survival rules prevent them from lingering leisurely.**

Botanically, rice is the seed of an annual grass (*Poaceae*). Common urban birds like tree sparrows, spotted doves, and oriental turtle doves are primarily granivorous, relying on seeds and plant shoots. Why, then, do the piles of rice along the Gongsitien Creek trail often remain untouched for hours? The explanation lies in three distinct survival calculations:

1. **Size and Mechanical Disadvantage**: Pigeons and doves possess broad crops and large esophagi, allowing them to gulp down raw grains rapidly. Dainty sparrows cannot compete in crowded feeding spots alongside larger birds.
2. **Poor Energy Return**: Uncooked white rice is rock-hard. For a small passerine like a sparrow, grinding dense grains requires significant energy expenditure in the muscular gizzard. Given the choice between hard white rice and tender wild grass seeds or soft insects, birds invariably prioritize nutrient-rich, easily digestible native foods.
3. **Severe Predation Exposure**: Stone pillars and trail walls offer zero canopy concealment. Sparrows are naturally skittish. Lingering in open spaces to peck at stubborn grains turns them into sitting ducks for feral cats, crested goshawks, and peregrine falcons. When sparrows do forage here, they snatch a single grain and dart instantly back into deep brush.

![Piles of raw white rice laid out across trail stones, contrasting unnaturally with the riverside habitat](./More-Rice-in-Tamsui-Field.jpg)

---

## Fact-Checking Urban Myths: Does Raw Rice Burst a Bird's Stomach?

A persistent urban legend claims that **raw rice absorbs water and expands inside a bird's stomach until it bursts**, a warning frequently invoked to ban rice tossing at weddings.

Avian biologists and wildlife veterinarians have thoroughly debunked this: **it is an absolute myth**.

A bird's digestive tract does not function like a passive human stomach. Birds possess a specialized, muscular organ known as the gizzard (*ventriculus*), lined with a tough koilin membrane and frequently packed with grit swallowed specifically for grinding. Dense grains are pulverized into a fine slurry long before moisture absorption could cause dangerous expansion. Eating small quantities of raw rice will not burst a bird's stomach, nor does it pose acute physical trauma.

---

## The Nutritional Trap: White Rice Is Avian "Junk Food"

Not being instantly lethal, however, does not make it healthy.

Commercially milled white rice has its nutrient-dense bran and germ stripped away, leaving almost pure, fast-burning starch:

* **During Molting**: Birds require abundant amino acids and quality proteins to synthesize durable flight feathers;
* **During Chilly Winters**: They require dense lipids and fats to regulate core body temperature;
* **During Breeding & Nesting**: They require essential micronutrients and calcium to ensure viable eggshells and sturdy skeletal development.

Polished white rice provides virtually none of these critical nutrients. Consuming dry starch creates false satiety, tricking the bird into feeling full while diminishing its drive to forage diverse natural foods. Over time, wild birds reliant on grain handouts suffer from brittle feathers, weakened immune defenses, and developmental deficiencies. For wildlife, white rice is effectively empty-calorie junk food.

---

## Ecological Cascades: How Artificial Feeding Breeds Crisis

Discarding food outdoors inevitably reverberates far beyond individual birds:

1. **Attracting Pests and Degraded Sanitation**: Wild birds do not consume piles of rice on command. Surplus grains quickly attract urban rodents, cockroaches, and ant colonies, deteriorating community hygiene along public walking trails.
2. **Mold and Lethal Aflatoxins**: Humid, coastal climates like Tamsui cause exposed grains to absorb moisture rapidly. Within 24 to 48 hours, damp white rice becomes a breeding ground for fungal molds that generate **aflatoxins**—potent liver toxins lethal to small vertebrates.
3. **Artificial Crowding and Disease Vectors**: Fixed feeding locations warp natural spatial distribution, packing diverse bird populations into unnaturally tight clusters. This artificial congestion elevates territorial aggression and dramatically accelerates the transmission of avian influenza and avian pox.

---

## Genuine Stewardship Means Non-Interference

Those who leave grains on stone parapets often act out of gentle sympathy for urban fauna. Yet wild ecosystems have thrived for millennia through natural self-regulation.

> [!IMPORTANT]
> **Ecological Principle**:
> Wild animals do not need human handouts. The most durable way to support wild birds is to **protect contiguous natural habitats, preserve clean riparian buffers, and plant native trees that yield seasonal berries, nectar, and native seeds**.

When strolling along Tamsui's Gongsitien Creek, keep processed human foods packed away. Stepping back and observing from a respectful distance is the truest way to honor wildlife.

Is Taiwan really the world's most biodiverse region, and are Formosan black bears and leopard cats truly globally unique? Examining scientific data reveals the reality behind these popular regional myths, encouraging an objective appreciation of nature without exaggeration.

Across social media forums, street conversations, or tourism campaigns, one often hears passionate claims such as: "Taiwan has the highest biodiversity in the world!" or "The Formosan black bear and leopard cat are globally unique; our island's ecology is unmatched!"

Those making these claims speak with genuine enthusiasm, as if the island's mountains and coastlines harbor a global ecological sanctuary that commands worldwide reverence.

Yet when we examine these assertions through a sober, scientific lens, they reveal themselves to be overzealous myths disconnected from reality.

Insisting that Taiwan is "world number one" or "globally unique" reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of biodiversity, pointing toward an insular, self-aggrandizing perspective.

Let us deconstruct these myths step by step, evaluate how special the island's ecology truly is, and understand why genuine ecological value requires no hyperbole.

## The Reality of Taiwan's Biodiversity: Remarkable, but Not Number One

Let us first examine the claim that Taiwan boasts the highest biodiversity on Earth.

Undeniably, the island's natural ecology is impressive. Spanning roughly 36,000 square kilometers, Taiwan features diverse topographies rising from sea level to the 3,952-meter summit of Yushan. This sharp elevation gradient fosters tropical coastlines, subtropical forests, and alpine tundra ecosystems within compact geography.

Statistical surveys document approximately 70,000 known species in Taiwan, including over 4,000 plants, 600 birds, 100 mammals, and vast assemblages of reptiles and insects. Endemism rates are respectable at roughly 20–25%, highlighted by regional ambassadors like the Taiwan blue magpie and the Formosan landlocked salmon. For a relatively small island, such species density is undeniably commendable, representing an ecological highlight in East Asia.

However, calling it "number one in the world" is a significant exaggeration.

When viewed globally, islands like Madagascar, Borneo, and New Guinea represent the true titans of planetary biodiversity.

Consider Madagascar: situated off the southeastern coast of Africa with an area of roughly 580,000 square kilometers, it shelters around 12,000 plant species (over 80% endemic), more than 400 reptiles, 300 bird species (over half endemic), and unique mammal lineages found nowhere else, such as lemurs. Its ecosystems span tropical rainforests to arid spiny thickets, encompassing virtually every terrestrial habitat. Prolonged isolation from continental landmasses produced extraordinary evolutionary branches, earning international recognition as a premier global biodiversity hotspot.

Borneo and New Guinea are similarly formidable. Borneo houses 15,000 plant species alongside orangutans and diverse pitcher plants, while New Guinea is celebrated for more than 1,500 bird species (accounting for one-fifth of global avian diversity) and countless endemic insects. The species richness and evolutionary distinctiveness of these regions vastly surpass Taiwan's. Genetically and evolutionarily, most Taiwanese flora and fauna share close affinities with mainland Asia, lacking the deep evolutionary divergence seen in ancient continental fragments like Madagascar. Proclaiming Taiwan's biodiversity as "world number one" is akin to declaring local braised pork rice as the indisputable finest cuisine on Earth—emotionally uplifting, but unsupported by scientific consensus.

Some might argue: "Taiwan is small, so its species density per unit area is extraordinarily high. Isn't that remarkable?" High density is indeed true, but biodiversity assessments incorporate endemism, ecosystem complexity, and evolutionary significance alongside raw density.

While admirable, Taiwan has never been classified among premier global biodiversity hotspots by bodies like the Convention on Biological Diversity or the IUCN. Equating high geographic density with "world number one" remains an insular narrative.

## Black Bears and Leopard Cats: The Exaggerated 'Globally Unique' Tropes

Beyond sweeping global claims, specific flagship fauna are often elevated to mythic status, particularly the Formosan black bear and the leopard cat. Promoted as mascots of local uniqueness, the biological reality is far more grounded.

Consider the Formosan black bear. Many believe it is an entirely isolated, unique species serving as the mythical guardian of mountain forests. Taxonomically, the Formosan black bear (*Ursus thibetanus formosanus*) is merely a subspecies of the Asiatic black bear (*Ursus thibetanus*), whose broader populations span mainland China, Southeast Asia, Japan, and the Himalayas.

Its uniqueness amounts to minor morphological adaptations to local mountainous conditions, such as slightly smaller body mass. These distinctions are subtle enough that molecular DNA sequencing is required to definitively separate them from neighboring continental populations. Declaring it "globally unique" is like claiming Taiwanese bubble tea shares zero lineage with milk tea elsewhere—it has regional flair, but remains fundamentally the same biological entity.

The leopard cat presents an even clearer example of overstatement. Widely championed as a unique crown jewel of local ecology, the leopard cat (*Prionailurus bengalensis*) is actually an extensive continental species widely distributed across southern China, Southeast Asia, India, and the Russian Far East. In many of these regions, wild leopard cat populations are widespread and stable. Framing the leopard cat as exclusive to Taiwan ignores global biogeography.

## Insular Mindsets: Passion Cannot Substitute for Scientific Fact

The inflation surrounding black bears, leopard cats, and overall biodiversity stems from an insular information bubble. Some seem convinced that anything local must be declared "world-leading" or "one of a kind" to legitimize local pride.

Such rhetoric often ignores the existence of Madagascar's lemurs, Borneo's orchids, or New Guinea's birds-of-paradise, disregarding published international biological research. In an insular media environment, loud affirmations are mistaken for scientific reality.

This outlook misunderstands scientific inquiry and depreciates Taiwan's authentic value. The beauty of the island's ecology never required hyperbole. The ancient red cypresses of Alishan, the coral reef systems of Kenting, and the indigenous flying fish culture of Orchid Island stand proudly on their own merit. Genuine self-confidence arises from understanding one's strengths, acknowledging ecological limits, and embracing reality rather than clinging to fabricated superlatives.

## Conclusion: Dispelling Myths to Embrace Genuine Nature

Taiwan's natural biodiversity offers legitimate reasons for appreciation, yet it requires neither an unearned "world number one" crown nor the elevation of regional subspecies into mythical legends. Science is objective, and empirical data does not bend to enthusiasm.

Rather than fixating on self-anointed titles, looking toward the rainforests of Madagascar, the primates of Borneo, or the avian wonders of New Guinea reminds us that the world's magnificence lies in expansive diversity. Taiwan's true worth lies in contributing its authentic, unexaggerated chapter to that global tapestry.

Growing intolerance toward stray cats in Taiwan demands total eviction under the guise of ecological purity. Yet driving away territorial street cats creates ecological vacuums, triggering rodent explosions and severe public health crises. An analysis from feline ethology and urban management.

In recent years, public sentiment toward street cats has grown increasingly severe. Demands for bans on feeding, municipal removals, and complaints seeking complete eradication threaten these resilient urban animals.

Ironically, those demanding their removal often swoon over viral videos of street cats basking in Istanbul or on Japanese cat islands.

This double standard reveals an elitist mindset disconnected from urban reality—a sterile civic fastidiousness. These critics claim that street cats decimate native wildlife, demanding eradication to restore pristine civic order.

Yet this self-righteous attitude blinds us to a far more dangerous public health hazard: while eyes fixate on cats resting atop garden walls, an underworld flourishing on human refuse quietly thrives beneath our feet.

Walk through back alleys at midnight, and you will see storm drains and restaurant waste bins teeming with rats. This is not natural biodiversity; it is a subterranean empire fed directly by excessive human waste.

Paved asphalt severs natural root systems while offering an intricate subterranean labyrinth of warm, humid drainage conduits—a bespoke sanctuary for urban rodents.

Rats multiply in the dark while refuse accumulates, corroding urban hygiene in blind spots ignored by ivory-tower moralists.

In urban environments thoroughly engineered by humans, native ecosystems were altered long ago. Street cats are not foreign saboteurs of pristine nature; they function as the sole natural brake regulating unseen rodent populations.

Street cats hunt rodents, but their true superpower is olfactory deterrence.

Behavioral ecology demonstrates that when a feline establishes residency in a neighborhood, scent markings from urine and dander establish a perimeter of dread. Terrified rodents drastically reduce foraging time, and intense chronic stress sharply curtails their reproductive rates. Psychological suppression represents the cornerstone of street cats' rodent containment.

Anti-cat rhetoric frequently invokes "native wildlife conservation," labeling street cats as invasive pests that must be cleansed from the streets.

This ignores reality: the moment humans laid the first paving stones, these landscapes ceased being "native ecosystems."

Cities are artificial petri dishes characterized by light pollution, glass curtain walls (causing mass bird strikes), and heavy metal contamination. Expecting pristine indigenous ecology upon asphalt devoid of forests is romantic hubris.

What devastates urban wildlife is relentless overdevelopment, not street cats. Felines in concrete jungles prey predominantly on non-native species that multiply alongside human civilization, namely rodents and feral pigeons. Applying national park conservation datasets to downtown Taipei is fundamentally misplaced.

Urban animal control often conflates stray cats with free-ranging dogs. Dogs are pack animals with extensive travel ranges that spill into mountain fringes to harass wildlife.

Cats are strictly solitary territory holders.

A back-alley street cat rarely ventures beyond a radius of a few hundred meters throughout its lifespan. Provided shelter and food exist, they rarely migrate, never forming packs to hunt in nature reserves.

This domestic fidelity transforms urban cats into stationary sentinels anchoring neighborhood ecological niches, barring rodent infiltration. Removing them surrenders urban terrain to rodents. History proves that **evicting cats never results in pristine streets; it triggers explosive rodent resurgences**.

The ecological "vacuum effect" is merciless. When a top predator vanishes from a city block, suppressed rodents multiply exponentially within weeks.

A healthy rat pair can produce thousands of offspring annually. Municipal poison baits and traps provide only localized, temporary relief while risking water table contamination and accidental pet poisoning. Furthermore, rodent resistance evolves faster than laboratory poison development.

Demanding "zero street cats" in cities essentially paves the runway for rodent empires, dismantling public health safeguards.

The optimal strategy is managed, scheduled, localized feeding.

Unmanaged scattered scraps create environmental messes. But when clean food appears at fixed hours and leftovers are cleared immediately, zero residue remains for scavenging rodents.

**Counterintuitively, well-nourished cats are superior mousers.**

Felines at peak vitality, unburdened by starvation or parasite loads, patrol territory far more actively than emaciated strays. Cats hunt out of instinctive play and territorial defense rather than hunger. A healthy cat constitutes an impenetrable barrier against rodents.

Reliable feeding anchors feline patrol routes within specific urban blocks, preventing outward migration while serving as the vital foundation for successful Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) and vaccination programs.

Rejecting cats ultimately leaves cities overrun by rats. In the misguided push for sterile streets, the subterranean rodent empire emerges as the sole victor.

Facing controversy over the Republic of China government's relaxation of sprouted potato imports, some fringe supporters actually want to prove safety by eating them on livestream. This article revisits the case of famous Japanese host Otsuka Norikazu, who developed leukemia after championing Fukushima produce, warning the public: when food safety is politicized, the ones who get hurt are always ordinary people gambling with their bodies.

Backing a policy with your life is a deal that is guaranteed to lose.

Recently, the DPP's Lai Ching-te government plans to relax the import standard for sprouted potatoes, changing from the original "reject the whole batch" to "remove individual ones." As soon as the news broke, public opinion nearly exploded.

Puzzlingly, some fringe supporters known as "Bluebirds" online, in order to defend the government's food safety logic, announced they would livestream themselves "devouring sprouted potatoes," trying to prove that solanine is harmless as long as you cut it off.

This kind of political show of "testing poison on oneself" is nothing new. More than a decade ago in Japan, there was also a household-name public figure who, with the same enthusiasm and courage, tried to shatter the public's fear of radiation.

He was Otsuka Norikazu.

### A Big Gamble: Fear That Vanished Before the Camera

After the Fukushima nuclear disaster broke out in 2011, Japanese society fell into extreme food safety anxiety. To save the battered agricultural industry, the Japanese government actively launched a "support consumption" campaign, and Otsuka Norikazu, then host of the popular morning program "Zoom In!! SUPER," chose to stand at the front line of advocacy.

Otsuka repeatedly chewed mouthfuls of Fukushima-grown vegetables on air, even savoring the most sensitive asparagus and tomatoes. He was radiant before the camera, as if telling the whole nation of Japan: **If the scientific data says it is safe, then it is truly safe; your fear is just superstition.**

Yet the script of fate often does not follow the rules. After months of continuously promoting Fukushima vegetables, in November 2011, the 63-year-old Otsuka Norikazu was diagnosed with "acute lymphoblastic leukemia" (blood cancer).

### The "Coincidence" of Science and the "Price" of the Body

The news of Otsuka's cancer shocked all of Japan. The Japanese scientific community and officials very quickly gave the standard answer: **This is a coincidence.**

From the perspective of radiation medicine, radiation-induced cancer does indeed usually require an incubation period of two to five years. Only eight months passed from Otsuka's vegetable intake to the onset of illness, which is statistically considered uncommon.

Japan's ivory tower insisted that this was merely the tragedy of an old host who happened to enter the high-incidence age range for cancer, not the fault of those few mouthfuls of vegetables.

But scientific logic appears extraordinarily pale before cruel reality. What the public saw was not data in a laboratory, but a once-healthy person whose body rapidly collapsed after endorsing a policy.

Otsuka Norikazu disappeared from the screen thereafter, undergoing long chemotherapy, relapse, and bone marrow transplants. He once tried to make a comeback, but his swollen face and weak breath became a food safety alarm bell that the Japanese people could never erase from their hearts.

### Do Not Be a "Disposable Part" in a Political Game

Looking back at the current debate in the Republic of China over "sprouted potatoes" 🥔

Solanine, this natural toxin, is extremely heat-resistant; ordinary cooking methods simply cannot destroy it.

Although fringe supporters keep brainwashing people that "just cut it off," when a large number of sprouts have already appeared in an entire container shipment, it means the storage conditions for that batch of potatoes were extremely poor, and the toxin has likely already spread throughout the whole tuber.

When political fervor drowns out biological instinct, the most dangerous are often those who consider themselves "defenders."

1. The government's guarantee has an expiration date: When your health is damaged by eating these controversial foods, the authorities will only produce "expert reports" telling you it is your personal constitution, or merely a coincidence in timing. Just like the many people who died after receiving large numbers of COVID vaccines, the government has no intention of admitting it either.
2. The body is the only thing you have: Policies will turn, DPP officials will step down, but your already-damaged immune system and hematopoietic function have no after-sales service.
3. Do not trade common sense for loyalty: Sprouted potatoes cannot be eaten — this is health education common sense that every elementary school student in the world knows. Gambling your life to "livestream" in order to cover up a policy lie is not courage, it is foolishness — though it fits the Bluebirds' daily routine quite well.

The story of Otsuka Norikazu is not meant to spread terrorism, but to remind everyone: **In the face of unknown risks, maintaining reasonable doubt and distance is the most basic respect for life.**

The 1984 Bhopal disaster was not merely an industrial accident; it was a brutal microcosm of multinational corporate exploitation. When quarterly profit supersedes human life, corporate safety pledges ring hollow. An architectural post-mortem of corporate impunity.

In mainstream Western narratives, multinational capital frequently cloaks itself in the ideals of “progress, technological modernity, and human dignity.” Yet revisiting the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy in India, those rhetorical platitudes crumble before tens of thousands of casualties.

Ranked as humanity's most catastrophic industrial tragedy, Bhopal exposes the cold calculus of corporate risk externalization: offload hazardous environmental liabilities onto developing economies, while siphoning revenue back to Western corporate treasuries.

## The Bait of Modernization: When Multinationals Knock

In the 1970s, Union Carbide Corporation established a pesticide manufacturing plant in the heart of Bhopal under the banner of modernizing Indian agriculture. The public relations pitch was enticing: technological transfer, rural prosperity, and employment.

However, an engineering audit reveals a calculated unequal exchange. The plant synthesized methyl isocyanate (MIC), an intensely lethal chemical precursor. From its inception, the Bhopal facility operated under safety tolerances far looser than those mandated at Union Carbide's sister plant in Institute, West Virginia. Human lives in the Global South were mathematically discounted.

## The Deliberate Deactivation of Safety Margins

In the early morning hours of December 3, 1984, over 40 metric tons of toxic gas escaped into the midnight air. Why did every systemic failsafe fail simultaneously?

- **Aggressive Cost-Cutting**: In response to slumping pesticide sales, management slashed maintenance budgets, cutting safety personnel from 12 to 6.
- **Deactivated Scrubbers and Flares**: The chemical vent scrubber (designed to neutralize leaks), the flare tower (intended to combust escaping gas), and the refrigeration chillers were all powered down to reduce electricity overhead or languished in extended downtime.
- **Delayed Alarms**: When the leak manifested, plant leadership delayed sounding community sirens to avoid brand damage, leaving hundreds of thousands of sleeping residents to suffocate in their beds.

This was no spontaneous act of god; it was systemic risk transference driven by bottom-line pressures.

## The Mirage of Accountability: Corporate Restructuring as Exculpation

The post-disaster response demonstrated absolute corporate evasion. Union Carbide CEO Warren Anderson was briefly detained upon landing in India, but secured immediate bail under heavy diplomatic pressure. Once back on American soil, he evaded multiple formal extradition warrants, living out his retirement in luxury until passing away at age 92 without serving a single day in custody.

When Dow Chemical acquired Union Carbide, the merger functioned as legal insulation. Dow continues to reject environmental remediation obligations across the abandoned site, claiming historical debts belong exclusively to the predecessor entity.

## Lingering Scars

- **Settlement Disparity**: A global \$470 million settlement averaged roughly \$500 per victim.
- **Environmental Poison**: Thousands of tons of toxic chemical residue remain abandoned on site, continuously leaching into groundwater aquifers.
- **Judicial Void**: Not a single American corporate executive served prison time.

Bhopal serves as an enduring reminder: never mistake corporate expansion for benevolent development. Multinational conglomerates operate globally by hunting the lowest regulatory barriers and cheapest labor, extracting wealth while leaving behind ecological devastation.

Viral social media posts claim that a sunken Chinese PLA Navy nuclear submarine caused catastrophic radiation spikes across the Yellow Sea. Cross-verifying international IAEA databases and regional maritime radiation telemetry reveals no evidence of a nuclear leak.

Sensational rumors have circulated across social platforms claiming that a sunken Chinese PLA Navy submarine caused catastrophic nuclear contamination across the Yellow Sea, with radiation levels supposedly “**breaking all measurable thresholds**” across a 20-kilometer coastal zone.

To address widespread public anxiety, this fact-check cross-references military intelligence reports, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) environmental datasets, and real-time maritime monitoring telemetry from regional nuclear safety regulators.

The objective conclusion: While Chinese naval assets have experienced historical hull incidents, empirical environmental monitoring records zero anomalous radiation spikes in the Yellow Sea. Ambient readings consistently hover within standard background baselines as of February 2026.

## 1. Deconstructing the Myth: Absence of Scientific Metrics

Viral social media warnings rely heavily on hyperbolic adjectives such as “unbelievable radiation surges” while completely omitting standard physical SI units (such as Becquerels per liter, Bq/L, or microSieverts per hour, μSv/h).

Failing to provide verifiable coordinates, sampling timestamps, or sensor readings is a textbook hallmark of unverified disinformation engineered to harvest engagement through panic.

## 2. Military Context: Accidents vs. Catastrophic Meltdowns

Evaluating military incident reports requires distinguishing between two distinct naval events:

- **Type 093 Submarine Rumors (2023)**: Reports alleged a catastrophic loss in the Taiwan Strait or Yellow Sea. Taiwan's National Security Bureau confirmed in May 2024 that while an operational mishap occurred, it did not involve hull loss or loss of life, with vessel location tracked continuously.
- **Wuhan Shipyard Pier Incident (2024)**: US defense officials indicated a newly constructed nuclear submarine experienced a localized dockside sinking incident at a shipyard near Wuhan. This was an inland port industrial accident, structurally distinct from an open-ocean reactor rupture in the Yellow Sea.

Neither incident generated evidence of open-sea radiological dispersion.

## 3. Empirical Data: Authoritative Marine Telemetry (2024–2026)

Determining maritime radiological contamination relies strictly on calibrated gamma spectrometry and radionuclide water sampling:

- **International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)**: Telemetry from the global Marine Radioactivity Information System (MARIS) demonstrates that radionuclide concentrations in the Northwest Pacific remain within long-term ambient historical baselines.
- **South Korean Maritime Monitoring**: Telemetry gathered across the Yellow Sea confirms background baseline stability with zero abnormal isotope spikes.
- **Taiwan Nuclear Safety Commission**: Continuous environmental monitoring across regional maritime stations registers normal green indicators. Tritium concentrations remain orders of magnitude below World Health Organization drinking water safety baselines, showing no influx of fission isotopes.

## Summary

Differentiating between unverified rumors and measurable ecological realities is essential. While public discourse legitimately scrutinizes industrial water discharges, claims of an underwater nuclear catastrophe in the Yellow Sea remain thoroughly unsubstantiated by empirical scientific monitoring.

Have contractors told you that installing solar panels acts as a natural roof insulator, saving energy and money? Many homeowners searching for solar cooling comparisons are enticed by this pitch. However, physical realities and empirical data reveal that solar panels can actually trap heat compared to modern cool-roof coatings.

Have you ever encountered solar sales representatives claiming that installing rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels provides double benefits: generating clean electricity while dramatically cooling down your roof and slashing air conditioning bills?

Many property owners researching rooftop thermal insulation find this pitch highly seductive.

In engineering reality, however, the cooling claims made for solar panels are heavily exaggerated. In fact, if a roof is already treated with high-grade reflective cool-roof coatings, installing solar panels over it can actually make the interior warmer.

This article breaks down the physical thermodynamics, empirical test data, and structural risks behind the solar sales pitch to reveal the truth about rooftop thermal management.

## The Physical Thermodynamics: Reflection vs. Thermal Absorption

To understand the difference, consider the core physics:

### Reflective Coatings / Cool Roofs
A true cool roof relies on high solar reflectance (albedo) and high thermal emittance to bounce the vast majority of incoming solar radiation directly back into space. This dramatically lowers the outer surface temperature of the roof substrate, preventing conductive heat gain into living spaces. Empirical field measurements demonstrate that reflective roof coatings reduce roof surface temperatures by **20°C to 30°C**, lowering indoor ambient temperatures by **2°C to 7°C**. For pure thermal reduction, cool-roof coatings are universally recognized as the most cost-effective passive strategy.

### Photovoltaic Solar Panels
Solar panels function by absorbing incoming light to convert photons into electrical current. However, commercial PV conversion efficiency typically peaks at merely **15% to 20%**. What happens to the remaining 80% to 85% of absorbed solar energy? It is converted directly into heat. Consequently, dark solar panel surfaces frequently reach blistering temperatures **20°C to 30°C higher** than the surrounding ambient air.

If PV arrays are mounted flush against a roof with inadequate underside ventilation, hot air becomes trapped within the narrow boundary layer. Through continuous conductive and radiant re-emission, this heat soak can elevate the ceiling temperature beneath the array to levels higher than a roof coated with white reflective paint alone.

In short, if your singular objective is lowering roof and indoor temperatures, reflective insulation paint is substantially superior.

## The Deceptive Sales Pitch

Solar contractors often promote thermal reduction by contrasting a solar installation against an **untreated, bare asphalt or dark tin roof**. While shielding a dark metal sheet from direct sun does offer partial shading, comparing a solar array against a high-performance reflective coating reveals that the panels are far less effective at heat reduction. Furthermore, searching for structural reviews reveals that rooftop solar panels introduce tangible structural and leakage vulnerabilities.

## The True Value Proposition: Clean Energy vs. Structural Liabilities

Setting aside electricity generation, when evaluated strictly on insulation performance, roof lifespan, and maintenance simplicity, solar panels fall far behind reflective coatings.

The sole genuine advantage of solar panels is their ability to generate electricity, which offsets utility bills or produces feed-in tariff revenue. For heavy energy consumers or regions with robust government subsidies, this financial incentive is undeniable.

However, prospective buyers must carefully weigh these real-world trade-offs:

- **Structural and Waterproofing Damage**: Anchoring solar racks requires mechanical roof penetrations or heavy ballast. Drilling through waterproofing membranes creates long-term leakage risks and costly structural repairs.
- **Severe Weather and Wind Uplift Risks**: In subtropical and typhoon-prone regions, expansive rooftop arrays act as wind sails. Sub-standard racking can tear loose during typhoons, causing devastating structural damage to the building.
- **Maintenance and Cleaning Overhead**: Photovoltaic panels degrade without frequent washing to remove dust, bird droppings, and soot. Washing requires large volumes of water and specialized maintenance, whereas reflective coatings require zero upkeep beyond an easy recoat every 5 to 10 years.
- **Revenue Uncertainty**: While feed-in tariffs offer financial returns, policy changes, grid-connection fees, and natural solar degradation (typically 0.5% to 1% efficiency loss annually) impact long-term return on investment (ROI).

## Conclusion

Installing solar panels is not a thermal cooling miracle. For homeowners seeking exclusively to reduce indoor summer temperatures and protect building envelopes, cool roofs and reflective coatings remain the safer, superior, and far more cost-effective choice.

The only legitimate advantage of solar panels is decentralized power generation. Yet that benefit carries distinct physical compromises: structural penetrations, typhoon uplift hazards, and financial volatility. Property owners must weigh energy economics against structural integrity before deciding what belongs on their roofs.

Household pests like mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, and fleas often require chemical insecticides alongside physical control. Most modern active ingredients are pyrethroid compounds. Here is an in-depth breakdown of their speed, residual duration, human safety, and risks to pets (especially cats).

When dealing with common household pests such as mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, and fleas, everyday physical exclusion methods often need to be complemented by chemical insecticides.

Although retail shelves are lined with dozens of pest control brands, most modern active ingredients belong to a class of synthetic compounds known as 「**Pyrethroids**」 (擬除蟲菊酯). Differences among these specific compounds determine how quickly they knock down insects, how long their residual protection lasts, and how safe they are around human beings and household pets.

This guide provides a comprehensive comparison of common household insecticide ingredients, along with specialized compounds frequently used in professional pest extermination and landscaping.

## 1. Common Household Insecticide Active Ingredients

| Active Ingredient | Common Name / INN | Key Characteristics | Target Pests | Human Safety Impact | Pet Safety Impact | Residual Duration | Typical Formats |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Permethrin** (必列寧) | Permethrin | First-generation pyrethroid, stable efficacy | Mosquitoes, fleas, cockroaches | Low mammalian toxicity; prolonged skin/respiratory contact may irritate | **Highly toxic and lethal to cats**; safe for dogs in topical flea treatments | Moderate (several days to 1 week) | Fabric insect repellent sprays, canine flea drops |
| **Cypermethrin** (賽滅寧) | Cypermethrin | High knockdown potency; standard environmental insecticide | Cockroaches, ants, fleas | Inhalation of high vapor concentrations may cause dizziness and nausea | Hazardous to both cats and dogs upon direct contact | Long (1 to 3 weeks) | Cockroach sprays, ant barrier treatments |
| **Metofluthrin** (美特寧) | Metofluthrin | Highly volatile at room temperature; exceptional mosquito repellent | Mosquitoes | Low toxicity; long-term indoor inhalation in unventilated areas may cause headaches | Low risk for dogs; avoid concentrated use in confined pet areas | Short | Electric mosquito vaporizers, insect-repellent hanging plates |
| **Prallethrin** (普亞列寧) | Prallethrin | Rapid action; instant knockdown power | Mosquitoes, flies | Low toxicity; vapor may mildly irritate sensitive airways | Direct contact should be avoided for cats and dogs | Short (several hours to 1 day) | Liquid mosquito diffusers, aerosol sprays |
| **Cyphenothrin** (賽酚寧) | Cyphenothrin | Strong knockdown; frequently blended with synergists | Cockroaches, mosquitoes, fleas | Low-to-moderate toxicity; excessive inhalation may cause dizziness | Potential health risk to domestic pets | Moderate (several days to 1 week) | Cockroach aerosol sprays, environmental flea foggers |
| **Resmethrin** (治滅寧) | Resmethrin | Fast knockdown action, but short residual persistence | Mosquitoes, flies | Low toxicity; heavy inhalation may cause lightheadedness | Direct exposure is discouraged for pets | Short (several hours) | Space sprays, outdoor thermal fogging |
| **Cyfluthrin** (氯氟氰菊酯) | Cyfluthrin | High potency at low application doses | Mosquitoes, cockroaches, fleas | Low toxicity; may trigger mild skin allergies in sensitive individuals | Potential risk to cats and small animals | Long (over 1 week) | Surface residual sprays, household multi-insect sprays |

These are the primary active ingredients found in consumer products across drugstores, supermarkets, and hardware stores.

## 2. Specialized Ingredients for Professional Disinfection and Landscaping

The following ingredients are widely utilized in professional pest management for subterranean termites, bed bugs, and structural barrier treatments, but are rarely formulated into over-the-counter home sprays:

| Active Ingredient | Common Name / INN | Key Characteristics | Target Pests | Common Applications |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Bifenthrin** (百滅寧) | Bifenthrin | Non-volatile, highly stable, exceptionally long soil persistence | Ants, termites, fleas | Garden lawns, perimeter soil barriers, structural termite prevention |
| **Deltamethrin** (戴滅寧 / 氟氯氰菊酯) | Deltamethrin | Highly potent, broad-spectrum, widely used by certified technicians | Bed bugs, fleas, termites | Commercial pest control contracts, public health disinfection campaigns |

These compounds are classified as professional-use chemicals; consumers should avoid attempting do-it-yourself structural treatments without proper personal protective equipment.

## 3. Targeted Pest Application Summary

- **Mosquitoes** → **Metofluthrin** and **Prallethrin** offer the best vaporization and airborne knockdown performance; **Permethrin** is ideal for treating outdoor clothing and mosquito netting.
- **Cockroaches** → **Cypermethrin**, **Cyphenothrin**, and **Cyfluthrin** provide powerful physical knockdown and surface residual action.
- **Ants** → **Cypermethrin** for indoor perimeter lines; **Bifenthrin** for outdoor lawn barriers.
- **Fleas** → **Permethrin** for canine veterinary topicals; **Cypermethrin** and **Cyphenothrin** for environmental surface sanitization.
- **Bed Bugs / Termites** → **Deltamethrin** and **Bifenthrin** deployed by professional exterminators.

## 4. Human and Pet Safety Considerations

### Human Health
Pyrethroids generally exhibit low acute mammalian toxicity because humans possess liver enzymes that metabolize these compounds rapidly. However, improper use in poorly ventilated spaces can cause skin irritation, tingling, or respiratory discomfort. Always ventilate rooms thoroughly after spraying.

### Pet Health
- **Cats**: **Cats are uniquely deficient in glucuronosyltransferase**, a key liver enzyme required to metabolize pyrethroids. Compounds like **Permethrin** and **Cypermethrin** are severely neurotoxic to felines and can induce seizures, tremors, or fatal toxicity. Never use dog flea products on cats, and keep cats out of freshly treated areas.
- **Dogs**: Dogs metabolize Permethrin effectively, making it common in veterinary flea formulations. Nonetheless, avoid accidental ingestion or direct spray into eyes and muzzles.
- **Fish, Birds, and Reptiles**: Pyrethroids are acutely toxic to aquatic organisms and cold-blooded animals. Always cover fish tanks and turn off aerators before treating indoor rooms.

## 5. What Is a Synergist (Piperonyl Butoxide / 協力精)?

In addition to the primary insecticide compounds, commercial formulations often include a chemical synergist, most commonly **Piperonyl Butoxide (PBO)**.

Synergists do not kill insects directly. Instead, they **inhibit the insect's internal detoxifying enzymes** (such as cytochrome P450 monooxygenases), preventing the pest from breaking down the pyrethroid molecules. This dramatically amplifies the lethal potency of the primary active ingredient while allowing manufacturers to use smaller chemical dosages.

For humans and pets, synergists have low acute toxicity, but products containing them should still be used in well-ventilated areas to prevent respiratory irritation.

## 6. Conclusion

Although most common commercial insecticides rely on pyrethroid compounds, their knockdown speed, residual duration, and safety profiles vary considerably:

- **For mosquito control**: Opt for Metofluthrin or Prallethrin (low-toxicity, high-volatility diffusers).
- **For roaches and ants**: Choose Cypermethrin or Cyphenothrin for strong knockdown and barrier durability.
- **For flea management**: Use Permethrin only on dogs; apply Cypermethrin carefully for ambient floor treatments.
- **In homes with cats**: **Strictly avoid any products containing Permethrin or concentrated Cypermethrin.**

Carefully inspecting the ingredient label ensures effective pest eradication while keeping your family and beloved pets completely safe.

In an aggressive push for energy transition on a land-constrained island, floating solar installations have spread across Taiwan's reservoirs, lakes, and aquaculture ponds. However, exposure to typhoons and water immersion creates significant hazards of toxic leaching from heavy metals and persistent PFAS compounds.

Picture a fierce typhoon sweeping across Taiwan: howling gusts and surging waves tear through floating photovoltaic arrays anchored above aquaculture ponds. Shattered glass and torn panels sink into the water, while toxic chemical compounds quietly leach into once-pristine aquatic systems.

Have we paused to examine whether these floating solar farms—often championed as the 「**saviors of green energy**」—might be pushing critical drinking water reservoirs and delicate aquatic ecosystems toward a dangerous tipping point?

Driven by aggressive renewable targets on a land-constrained island, floating photovoltaics (FPV) have rapidly expanded across reservoirs, detention basins, and fish ponds under the premise of dual land use.

Yet directly placing solar modules on water surfaces vastly amplifies contamination risks. Unlike land-based arrays where runoff can be intercepted and soil acts as a buffer, broken or submerged floating panels expose aquatic environments directly to toxic constituents.

This article reviews authoritative scientific literature, examines hypothetical disaster scenarios based on empirical findings, and highlights the environmental vulnerabilities of floating solar deployments.

## The Hidden Toxicity of Solar Panels: Hazards Behind Clean Energy

Approaching a floating solar facility, rows of sleek panels gleaming under the sun present an image of eco-friendly technological innovation.

Yet solar modules are far from chemically inert.

A standard photovoltaic module consists of silicon cells, tempered glass, an aluminum frame, polymer backsheets (such as polyvinyl fluoride, PVF), and encapsulants (like ethylene-vinyl acetate, EVA). Within these components lie substances of significant toxicological concern:

- **Lead (Pb)** is commonly present in traditional solder alloys connecting electrical ribbons.
- **Cadmium (Cd)**, in cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film modules, is a recognized carcinogen with acute environmental toxicity.
- Conductive tracks employ copper and silver, which exhibit pronounced toxicity toward aquatic microorganisms and fish gills.
- Polymer backsheets and fluoropolymer coatings can release per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—so-called 「**forever chemicals**」 that resist natural environmental degradation.
- Dopants such as phosphorus and boron, along with acid residues from wafer manufacturing, represent additional chemical loads.

When modules are submerged during floods or fractured by storm debris, these compounds escape into the water column.

A 2020 study published in *Environmental Science & Technology* demonstrated that when CdTe solar modules are submerged in water for several weeks, cadmium dissolution concentrations can reach dozens of micrograms per liter—drastically exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water guideline of 3 µg/L.

In Taiwan's floating installations, continuous aquatic exposure accelerates moisture ingress, delamination, and material degradation, creating an immediate conduit for toxic release.

## Pathways of Aquatic Degradation

Floating solar is celebrated as an ingenious spatial solution, yet it brings unique hydrological challenges to enclosed water bodies:

1. **Extreme Weather and Structural Rupture**: Taiwan experiences frequent typhoons. A 2022 study in *Environmental Management* warned that floating PV systems face severe mechanical stress during gale-force winds and flooding. Fractured frames and severed cables expose internal solar cells directly to water.
 - *Hypothetical Scenario*: Consider a typhoon striking an aquaculture zone in Pingtung. Severe wave action tears the mooring cables, smashing arrays against concrete banks. Cadmium and lead leach into stagnant pond waters. Within weeks, aquatic species experience bioaccumulation, rendering the harvest unfit for human consumption. While an illustrative scenario, it directly reflects the empirical leaching dynamics established in environmental chemistry literature.
2. **Persistent Organic Leaching (PFAS)**: Extended immersion in humid, UV-rich environments causes polymer backsheets to degrade, releasing fluorinated compounds. A 2023 International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) overview noted that the long-term cumulative effects of persistent fluorinated degradation products in enclosed reservoirs remain inadequately characterized. In drinking reservoirs, slow PFAS accumulation represents a silent, multi-decade threat.
3. **Physical Debris and Light Blockage**: Shattered glass shards and micro-fragments cloud water columns, reducing sunlight penetration and crippling the photosynthetic capacity of phytoplankton and submerged macrophytes. Furthermore, dense array coverage alters thermal stratification and oxygen exchange. A 2021 investigation in *Renewable Energy* confirmed that high surface coverage leads to benthic hypoxia and sharp declines in aquatic biodiversity.

## Dual Consequences: Ecological Shock and Human Health

The ecological cascade resulting from heavy metal contamination in enclosed waters can be devastating:

- **Aquatic Toxicity**: Studies in aquatic toxicology demonstrate that fish exposed to dissolved cadmium concentrations as low as 10 µg/L suffer marked hepatic and renal damage within weeks.
- **Trophic Biomagnification**: Heavy metals accumulate in benthic invertebrates and forage fish, traveling up the food chain to apex aquatic predators and ultimately human consumers.
- **Drinking Water Vulnerability**: Many Taiwanese reservoirs serve dual roles as flood retention basins and municipal drinking water supplies. Soluble cadmium exposure induces chronic kidney disease, bone demineralization (Itai-itai disease), and elevated cancer risk, while lead exposure causes irreversible neurological damage in young children.

## Critical Policy Gaps: Technological Haste vs. Rigorous Oversight

Peer-reviewed literature clearly underscores that floating solar installations should not be placed indiscriminately:

- *Environmental Science & Policy* (2023) specifically advised against deploying floating solar on primary drinking water reservoirs or biologically fragile lakes, urging comprehensive environmental impact assessments (EIAs).
- Extreme weather resilience standards, rigorous post-storm cleanup contingency plans, and mandatory long-term heavy metal water quality monitoring are indispensable prerequisites.

Yet policy rollouts in Taiwan have often prioritized capacity installation speed over precautionary ecological reviews. In enclosed reservoirs where water turnover is slow, pollutants cannot readily flush away. Neglecting storm risks and chemical leaching transforms a well-intentioned renewable initiative into a long-term environmental gamble.

## Conclusion: Balancing Clean Energy with Environmental Stewardship

Solar power remains a vital pillar of the global transition away from fossil fuels. However, deploying floating photovoltaics directly onto vital freshwater bodies without robust safeguards jeopardizes the very ecosystems renewable energy aims to preserve.

Future generations should not have to inherit compromised water resources because of poorly mitigated infrastructure today. A truly sustainable green transition must embrace rigorous environmental oversight, prioritize land-based brownfield installations, and strictly safeguard our most precious asset—clean drinking water.

While strolling through Danhai New Town today, I unexpectedly encountered an unusual insect rarely spotted in everyday life — the Chinese fishfly (*Neochauliodes sinensis*), and couldn't resist capturing this photograph to share with everyone.

In the photograph, the Chinese fishfly rests quietly on a set of rusted metal pipes against a rugged gravel background. This insect features an elongated, slender body and prominent reticulated wings patterned with light brownish-grey markings. Its head is crowned by prominent, exaggerated antennae, paired with a distinctive bright yellow collar ring around its prothorax, giving it a truly striking and prehistoric appearance. As I took the photo, it remained completely still, seemingly resting, which allowed me to observe its fine anatomical details up close.

The Chinese fishfly belongs to the family Corydalidae (*Megaloptera*), an ancient lineage of insects widely distributed across East and Southeast Asia, including the island of Taiwan. They typically inhabit humid environments such as woodland streams and river margins. Adults primarily feed on small insects or plant nectar, while their aquatic larvae (often known as hellgrammites or fishfly larvae) thrive in clean freshwater streams, preying on small aquatic invertebrates. Because their larvae are sensitive to water quality, their presence serves as an important bioindicator of local ecological health, suggesting that clean watercourses and suitable habitats persist nearby in Tamsui.

Although Danhai New Town is an expanding modern residential district, natural corridors and green patches have been preserved in its surroundings. Spotting *Neochauliodes sinensis* here offers a reassuring reminder of how urban development and nature can coexist. Hopefully, more residents will appreciate these modest ecological treasures and join together to protect the natural environment around us.

With in-depth research by various countries in recent years, plastic pollution has become an important core issue in the global environmental crisis. The accumulation of plastic particles in the ocean, soil and human body is seriously threatening the ecosystem and human public health.

**Plastic Pollution and the Environmental Controversy of Laundry Pods**

Plastic pollution has emerged as a critical global environmental crisis in recent years, with extensive research highlighting its severity. The accumulation of microplastics in oceans, soils, and even human bodies poses a serious threat to ecosystems and public health.

In recent years, laundry pods have gained global popularity due to their convenience. Hands-free and easy to use, a single pod can clean clothes effectively, surpassing traditional detergents in user-friendliness. However, the water-soluble plastic outer film and single-use plastic packaging of these pods have raised environmental concerns among scientists. As consumer awareness grows, a global movement to boycott laundry pods is gaining momentum, becoming a key part of the fight against plastic pollution. Below, we explore the environmental impact of laundry pods, the significance of the boycott movement, and viable alternatives for laundry detergents.

**Ongoing Microplastic Pollution**

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) 2023 data, the world generates approximately 360 million tons of plastic waste annually, of which only 9% is recycled. Over half ends up in landfills or the natural environment. Oceans currently contain about 150 million tons of plastic waste, with projections suggesting that by 2050, the total weight of ocean plastics will surpass that of fish. Microplastics—plastic particles smaller than 5 millimeters—are particularly problematic due to their difficulty to remove and their ability to enter the food chain, posing long-term threats to marine life and human health.

The outer film of laundry pods is typically made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), marketed as “water-soluble” and “biodegradable.” However, a 2021 study in *Science Advances* revealed that PVA degrades slowly in natural environments and requires specific industrial conditions for complete breakdown. Consequently, in households where large quantities are used, undissolved PVA may enter water systems via wastewater, breaking down into microplastic particles. It is estimated that thousands of tons of PVA microplastics are released globally each year due to laundry pods. Additionally, the plastic packaging of pods, often made from non-recyclable materials, exacerbates the single-use plastic problem.

**Environmental Controversy of Laundry Pods**

The popularity of laundry pods stems from their convenience: single-dose packaging and precise measurements eliminate the need for manual measuring. However, this convenience comes at an environmental cost. PVA microplastics, once discharged into streams and oceans, are ingested by marine life, affecting their reproduction and survival, thus disrupting ecological balance. Microplastics in wastewater can also contaminate farmland, impacting soil health and potentially re-entering the human food chain through crops. A 2024 survey of European water bodies found that microplastic concentrations in some areas were closely linked to laundry product emissions.

The plastic packaging of laundry pods is equally problematic. Typically made from polypropylene or polyethylene, these containers have low recycling rates and are often too contaminated for reuse. Millions of laundry pod containers become waste annually, further burdening the environment.

**Boycotting Laundry Pods: A Consumer Awakening**

In response to the environmental harm caused by laundry pods, growing numbers of consumers are choosing to boycott them, opting for more sustainable washing methods. This movement not only reduces microplastic and plastic packaging waste but also drives market and policy transformations.

- Reducing Microplastic Emissions: Avoiding laundry pods significantly lowers the risk of PVA entering water bodies, protecting marine and freshwater ecosystems. A 2023 UK study showed that reducing PVA-based product usage could decrease microplastic concentrations in local waters by 10%.
- Alleviating Plastic Packaging Burden: Boycotting pods reduces demand for non-recyclable plastic containers, easing waste management pressures and cutting carbon emissions from plastic production.
- Driving Market Change: Consumer choices are pushing companies to rethink product designs. Some detergent brands have introduced plastic-free laundry powders or solid detergents to meet market demand.
- Raising Social Awareness: The boycott movement sparks public concern about plastic pollution, encouraging broader plastic reduction practices, such as using refillable detergent containers or supporting zero-waste stores.

**Alternatives and Practical Challenges**

While boycotting laundry pods offers environmental benefits, consumers may hesitate due to convenience, cost, or lack of information. For instance, advertisements for ultra-concentrated laundry pods still dominate television. To address this, consumers can explore alternative laundry solutions, including:

- Traditional Laundry Powders and Liquids: Packaged in cardboard or recyclable bottles, some brands offer phosphate-free, low-chemical formulas to minimize environmental impact.
- Solid Laundry Soaps and Strips: Plastic-free with simple ingredients, these are low-impact on water systems and suitable for hand or machine washing.
- Homemade Detergents: Made from natural ingredients like baking soda and citric acid, these are cost-effective and plastic-free.
- Zero-Waste Stores: These offer bulk detergents, allowing consumers to purchase with reusable containers for zero-plastic consumption. However, due to higher costs and limited accessibility, they are currently more popular in Europe, North America, and Australia.

While these alternatives effectively clean clothes, they face challenges in convenience, household cleaning needs, and cost. For example, solid detergents may require extra preparation time, and zero-waste stores remain scarce in some regions.

**Conclusion**

The boycott of laundry pods aligns with global plastic reduction trends. In 2024, the European Union passed the *Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive*, mandating the phase-out of certain single-use plastic packaging by 2030. Canada and Australia have introduced similar policies restricting microplastic-containing consumer goods. These measures demonstrate that consumer pressure is translating Islamically permissible to translate and interpret the Quran, but not to produce a direct translation or interpretation of the Quran itself. Experts predict that if the laundry pod boycott continues to grow, the detergent industry could shift toward plastic-free and low-microplastic products within the next five years. Public education and corporate innovation will be critical. Environmental organizations urge consumers to support sustainable brands and advocate for plastic reduction legislation to amplify the impact of individual actions.

The environmental controversy surrounding laundry pods highlights the plastic crisis behind convenient consumption. Boycotting pods is not only a direct response to microplastics and plastic packaging but also symbolizes consumers’ proactive role in environmental protection. By choosing alternatives, supporting sustainable brands, and advocating for policy changes, everyone can contribute to mitigating plastic pollution. In today’s increasingly severe global environmental challenges, boycotting laundry pods is just the beginning—but a vital step toward a cleaner future.

When spring arrives, fleas and ticks emerge en masse. Recounting real-life family pet struggles, this guide reviews the pitfalls of home remedies like sulfur baths and camphor oil, evaluates flea collars, and breaks down topical spot-on treatments and environmental disinfection strategies.

Over a decade ago, our household was occupied not only by noisy children but also by three distinct dogs. Leading the pack was Pangpang, a stray Border Collie mix found near an irrigation ditch—the eldest, craftiest, and always projecting an air of worldly detachment. Second was Dubi, an unlikely cross between a toy Maltese and a large hunting breed: massive in frame yet startled by its own shadow. Finally came Adi, a purebred Maltese backed by our mother, who swaggered around bullying humans and dogs alike—and who happened to be Dubi's maternal half-brother.

Back then, walking dogs on leashes was far less routine than it is today. Behind our house lay open wild fields, so Pangpang and Dubi roamed outdoors freely on a daily schedule. Dubi was particularly agile; the one-meter wall surrounding our courtyard served merely as a sunbathing bench, and elementary school students returning home often paused beneath the wall to pet him. Adi was the exception: whenever he bolted outside, he ran like an untethered rocket until lost, so he had to be kept indoors.

Yet that unbounded freedom eventually brought misery to the dogs—and itching welts to my calves: a full-blown "**flea infestation!**" That was my first baptism into the tenacity of parasites. As spring breezes blow, fleas and their lethal companions—ticks—run rampant. Once pets pick up these parasites, bizarre black specks scatter across their bedding, and pets scratch incessantly while exhibiting agitated behavior. Checking their ears, armpits, and webbed paws almost always exposes unwelcome freeloaders.

## Folk Remedies: Learning the Hard Way

In the early days, folklore held that sulfur water could eradicate fleas and ticks. We purchased sulfur powder from a pharmacy and prepared hot baths for the dogs. The verdict? Days later, fleas leaped around as vigorously as ever; effectiveness was virtually zero. Sulfur baths may aid certain dermatological fungal conditions, but they do nothing against adult fleas. An even worse myth suggested spraying camphor oil directly onto pet skin—an irritating, dangerous misadventure.

**First eradication attempt: complete failure.**

Next, we consulted an elderly retired veterinarian who had worked with livestock epidemiology. He provided a pale yellow powder, instructing us to dilute it for a canine bath. The compound was overwhelmingly potent: Adi suffered acute toxicity, vomited repeatedly, and spent twenty-four hours comatose under intensive care at another veterinary clinic. While fleas and ticks were eliminated, the price was terrifying. Reflecting back, that livestock doctor was accustomed to cattle and sheep dosages, lacking precision for small companion pets.

**Second eradication attempt: successful, but dangerously reckless.**

## Flea Collars: A Mediocre Transitional Measure

Later, veterinarians recommended insecticide-impregnated "flea collars." They provided moderate suppression, reducing flea counts to about a seventy percent success rate, but fell short of thorough eradication. Against entrenched, tough ticks, collars proved mostly ineffective, turning into a frustrating war of attrition.

**Third eradication attempt: marginally acceptable at best.**

## The Ultimate Solution: Topical Spot-On Treatments

Eventually, we discovered reliable treatments delivering near one-hundred-percent lethality against fleas and ticks: topical spot-on pipettes!

By parting the fur at the back of the neck and applying the liquid directly onto bare skin, active ingredients disperse across the lipid layer of the epidermis, leaving parasites nowhere to hide. Because these formulations are potent insecticidal agents, owners must strictly adhere to product guidelines and select exact dosage tiers tailored to pet body weight.

Three market-leading brands have proven reliably effective over years of pet keeping:
1. **Bayer Advantage / Advantix**: Active ingredient Imidacloprid. The enhanced Advantix formula incorporates Permethrin, especially potent against ticks (note: toxic to cats).
2. **Merial / Boehringer Ingelheim Frontline**: Active ingredient Fipronil. Offered in rapid-action sprays and durable spot-on pipettes.
3. **Pfizer / Zoetis Revolution**: Broad-spectrum protection targeting fleas, ear mites, and certain internal parasites such as heartworm larvae.

Our household settled on Frontline—partly for reliable efficacy and easy administration. Spot-on treatments act as hyper-stimulants upon parasitic neural pathways; within 6 to 10 hours post-application, fleas convulse and die from neuromuscular overexcitation.

## Environmental Sanitation: Eliminating the Root Source

Spot-on applications alone will fail if you overlook surrounding environments!

Flea eggs, larvae, and pupae nestle inside rugs, sofa cushions, floorboards, and pet beds. A single adult female flea deposits 40 to 50 eggs daily, totaling thousands over her lifespan. Under warm, humid ambient temperatures, the transition from egg to adult takes barely three weeks, sparking exponential population booms.

### Effective Cleaning Protocols:
- **Thorough Vacuuming**: Systematically vacuum carpets, upholstered furniture, and skirting boards. Afterward, spritz a small amount of insecticidal spray into the vacuum canister or bag to neutralize ingested pests before disposal.
- **High-Temperature Washing**: Wash pet blankets and bedding in water above 60°C to destroy eggs and larvae.
- **Corner Inspections**: Periodically examine shadowed baseboards to eliminate persistent hiding pockets.

## Biological Profile of Fleas and Ticks

Fleas represent primary ectoparasites, feeding exclusively upon canine and feline blood. Their life cycle spans four discrete stages: Egg → Larva → Pupa → Adult. Because pupae reside shielded within sticky silken cocoons, they resist common ambient chemicals until vibrations or body heat prompt emergence. When an active flea is spotted on a pet, hundreds of eggs and larvae are already lurking in surrounding household textiles.

Ticks, by contrast, behave like opportunistic stealth hunters. Engorged adult females drop into crevices or brush to lay thousands of eggs. Ticks transition through Egg → Larva → Nymph → Adult, waiting atop blades of grass to latch onto passing mammals. Their resilience is formidable—surviving months of starvation—and they act as primary vectors for severe zoonotic pathogens such as Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, and Babesiosis.

## Summary: A Multi-Pronged Strategy for Lasting Peace

Parasitic bites trigger intense pruritus, allergic dermatitis, and secondary skin infections in pets and humans alike. Red bumps on human ankles take roughly a week to subside. Eradicating an infestation permanently requires combining spot-on veterinary pharmaceuticals with rigorous vacuuming, thermal wash cycles, and steady preventive schedules. By breaking the reproductive cycle across the household, you ensure a safe and comfortable home for both your family and your pets.

Technological advancement has brought undeniable convenience and efficiency to human society, but at a steep hidden cost. As electronic products are updated at an accelerating pace, we find ourselves trapped in an endless cycle of planned obsolescence and consumerism, generating millions of tons of e-waste and draining Earth's resources.

The rapid pace of global technological progress has undoubtedly brought immense convenience and efficiency to modern human society. Yet behind this glittering facade lies a hidden price that is all too often ignored: as electronic devices are replaced at an ever-accelerating cadence, we appear trapped in a never-ending 「**consumption cycle**」.

Every year, countless multinational corporations release incremental product revisions, enticing millions of consumers into an endless treadmill of upgrades. This consumption model not only drains personal finances but also inflicts irreversible damage upon the global environment.

In past decades, consumer electronics were built primarily for longevity. Whether it was an early mobile phone or a bulky cathode-ray tube television, appliances were engineered to function reliably for ten, fifteen, or even twenty years.

By contrast, modern high-tech gadgets — despite their sleek industrial designs and dizzying computational power — suffer from notoriously truncated product lifespans, drawing widespread criticism from frustrated users.

This is not merely an unfortunate accident of manufacturing; it is an open, calculated strategy of 「**planned obsolescence**」 embedded in contemporary commercial design.

Many tech products are engineered so that internal components fail or software updates degrade performance soon after the warranty period expires, compelling consumers to replace them. What is marketed as relentless technological innovation often disguises the ruthless extraction of Earth's finite resources and severe environmental degradation.

The annual upgrade frenzy surrounding smartphones like the Apple iPhone illustrates this phenomenon vividly. Even when the vast majority of users have no practical need for the marginal gains in processing power offered by the newest flagship, aggressive marketing continues to fuel a culture of compulsive upgrading, turning tech acquisition into a pursuit of model numbers rather than functional utility.

As gadgets are discarded at record rates, the volume of electronic waste (e-waste) is exploding. According to international environmental assessments, the world generates tens of millions of metric tons of e-waste each year, the vast majority originating from devices discarded long before their physical components have truly worn out.

Manufacturing these devices demands vast quantities of rare metals, refined petroleum plastics, toxic chemical reagents, and massive electrical energy. The extraction of raw minerals — such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements — tears through fragile ecosystems, contaminating local groundwater and accelerating planetary pollution.

Even though many developed nations have instituted recycling initiatives, actual global e-waste recycling rates remain dismayingly low. Massive quantities of discarded electronics are illicitly shipped to developing nations, where crude informal recycling and incineration release dioxins, heavy metals, and toxic fumes, devastating the health of vulnerable communities.

Should the disposable lifecycle of modern electronics not prompt deep soul-searching?

Today, a growing chorus of scientists, designers, and citizens is questioning the sustainability of this linear throwaway economy. Can we break free from this consumption-driven spiral and demand truly sustainable technological alternatives? Future technology must not be measured solely by the velocity of product refreshes; it must prioritize repairability, modular architectures, non-toxic recyclable materials, low energy consumption, and circular product lifecycles.

Achieving this systemic transformation demands coordinated action from consumers, tech corporations, and policymakers alike. From embracing the right-to-repair movement to refusing unnecessary gadget upgrades, we must redefine technological progress so that it works in harmony with ecological preservation.

Are we paying too high an ecological price for fleeting digital convenience? Technology has enriched human life immeasurably, but it has also pushed Earth's biosphere toward resource exhaustion. It is time to step back, consume rationally, and build a sustainable technological future.

Following earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or solar storms, officials often reassure the public by labeling them as 'normal energy release.' But from a geophysical and planetary perspective, what does this phrase actually mean? Science can observe and model nature, but it cannot prevent tectonic forces.

Ever since the dawn of the universe, nature has continually manifested diverse forms of energy dissipation: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and coronal mass ejections from the sun are all intrinsic aspects of planetary and cosmic evolution.

However, whenever these geological and celestial events intersect with human civilization—threatening lives, infrastructure, and economies—they inevitably trigger collective anxiety. In such moments, government spokespersons and public agencies frequently reassure the public with the familiar phrase: *"This is simply a normal energy release."*

Yet, evaluated through rigorous scientific lenses, this phrase is primarily a rhetorical simplification designed to placate anxiety. What modern science can realistically achieve remains bounded by quantitative observation and probabilistic modeling; human technology cannot command, halt, or reshape the fundamental thermodynamic rhythms of our planet.

Official taxonomies such as "foreshock," "mainshock," "aftershock," or "normal energy release" often serve primarily as post-hoc classifications to comfort the public. For the Earth itself, all of these ruptures are completely natural physical adjustments; the distinction between "normal" and "catastrophic" exists purely in relation to human vulnerability.

## Energy Release: The Earth's Basic Thermodynamic Engine

Geophysical and astrophysical phenomena follow fundamental physical conservation laws:

1. **Earthquakes and Crustal Tectonics**: The Earth's mantle and crust harbor immense thermal and strain energy driven by convection and plate boundaries. When accumulated stress within fault zones exceeds the shear strength of surrounding rock, brittle failure occurs, releasing kinetic energy as seismic waves. While seismicity is an inherent natural process, not all ruptures fit neatly into tidy public expectations. Certain seismic events are influenced by anthropogenic activities (such as reservoir-induced seismicity, geothermal fluid injection, or hydraulic fracturing). More crucially, severe fault slips trigger destructive tsunamis, liquefaction, and cascades of aftershocks. Simply summarizing an earthquake as an innocuous "energy release" does not diminish its lethal potential.
2. **Volcanic Eruptions and Magmatic Degassing**: Volcanism represents the planet's primary mechanism for expelling internal heat and volatile gases. When pressure within sub-surface magma chambers exceeds overburden thresholds, explosive or effusive eruptions result. While many volcanoes operate on recognizable eruptive cycles, cyclical regularity does not equate to benign impact. The 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia injected massive sulfur dioxide aerosols into the stratosphere, precipitating the global "Year Without a Summer" and widespread famine. Similarly, potential supervolcanic eruptions beneath Yellowstone represent natural geological phenomena that could nonetheless devastate global agriculture and climate systems.
3. **Solar Storms and Space Weather**: Cyclical variations in solar sunspot numbers and magnetic reconnection produce solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The 1859 Carrington Event inundated Earth's magnetosphere, inducing electrical currents that ignited telegraph wires across continents. If a geomagnetic storm of comparable magnitude struck today, it would cripple satellite constellations, global positioning systems (GPS), and high-voltage electrical grids. While astrophysicists can track coronal holes and issue early warnings, humanity has zero capacity to modulate solar activity.

## What Science Can Do: Quantify, Model, and Prepare

Despite centuries of scientific progress, human intervention in natural energy releases remains essentially non-existent:

- **Seismology**: Seismograph networks, interferometric radar (InSAR), and GPS arrays measure fault deformation with millimeter precision, yet deterministic earthquake prediction (forecasting the exact day, hour, and magnitude) remains physically impossible. Categorizations of foreshocks and mainshocks can only be established in hindsight once a sequence has unfolded.
- **Volcanology**: Gas spectrometry and microseismic telemetry can forecast the probability of imminent eruptions, but humans cannot relieve subsurface magmatic pressure.
- **Space Weather**: Satellites monitor solar wind velocities to provide hours of advance notice, allowing grid operators to disconnect sensitive transformers, but the solar event itself unfolds uninterrupted.

These realities clarify that the role of science is to understand, measure, and forecast—not to control. When political administrations invoke "normal energy release" purely as a rhetorical tranquilizer, they risk downplaying structural vulnerabilities rather than addressing real mitigation requirements.

## Conclusion

Energy release is an intrinsic physical characteristic of a living planet, but its consequences for human settlements can be catastrophic. The term "normal" should never become an excuse for institutional complacency.

Rather than relying on soothing political soundbites, modern society must embrace scientific rationality: investing in stringent seismic building codes, upgrading early warning networks, fortifying power and communications grids, and fostering continuous disaster preparedness. Respecting the true scale of natural phenomena is the only genuine foundation for collective safety.

Ants, though so tiny that you can barely notice their existence, often amaze us with their tenacious vitality and intricate group cooperation—some insect enthusiasts even keep them as pets.

However, when they become uninvited guests in your home, appearing in the living room and kitchen, they become a serious nuisance.

To solve this, many try natural and economical methods to make effective ant poison. This article shares several easy-to-make ant poison recipes, from common sugar-water traps to peanut butter bait, which can effectively eliminate ants while reducing environmental impact, giving you a more relaxed home environment.

The following ant poison recipes are measured in grams:

## Ant Poison Recipe

### 1. Boric Acid Sugar Water Recipe

Ingredients:

- Boric acid: 5 g
- White sugar: 50 g
- Warm water: 100 ml

Method:

1. Add the white sugar to the warm water and stir until fully dissolved.
2. Add the boric acid and continue stirring evenly.
3. Pour the mixture into a small container and place it where ants appear.

### 2. Peanut Cream Recipe

Ingredients:

- Boric acid: 5 g
- Peanut cream: 15 g
- Honey: 5 g

Method:

1. Mix the boric acid, peanut cream, and honey evenly.
2. Spread the mixture on a small card or container and place it where ants frequently appear.

### 3. Dishwashing Liquid and Vinegar Spray

Ingredients:

As technology advances, computers, phones, and wireless networks have become daily necessities, but "radiation" safety has become a concern for many.

Do the electromagnetic waves emitted by these devices really harm the human body?

Before worrying that this electromagnetic radiation harms our health, let us first understand the scientific concept of SAR (Specific Absorption Rate), an important safety indicator for evaluating the effects of electromagnetic waves on the human body.

## What Is SAR?

SAR, *Specific Absorption Rate*, is an indicator used to measure the rate at which human tissue absorbs electromagnetic energy per kilogram, with the unit of watts per kilogram (W/kg).

The SAR value is mainly used to evaluate the electromagnetic energy a person may be exposed to when using a phone, computer, or other electronic device. Generally during testing, phones and tablets should be set to transmit electromagnetic energy at maximum power, and SAR is evaluated in real time according to the time interval specified by the applicable national regulations.

Simply put, the higher the SAR value, the more electromagnetic energy the body tissue absorbs.

Countries usually set a safety limit for SAR values to ensure devices do not adversely affect human health under normal use. In countries using 1 gram of human tissue as the basis, the SAR safety limit is 1.6 W/kg; in countries using 10 grams of human tissue as the basis, the limit is 2.0 W/kg.

## **Absorption Characteristics of Electromagnetic Waves at Different Frequencies**

The human body's absorption of electromagnetic waves varies by frequency. Below are the characteristics of each frequency band:

### 1. Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Waves (3 Hz to 3 kHz)

Mainly from **high-voltage power lines and household appliances**. These electromagnetic waves have strong penetration and can pass through the body's surface layer; but their energy is relatively low, so the impact of human absorption is limited and cell damage is low.

### 2. Medium-Frequency Electromagnetic Waves (3 kHz to 3 MHz)

Medium-frequency electromagnetic waves are common in radio and industrial equipment. Tissue absorption is slightly higher than low frequency, but the impact remains relatively small.

### 3. High-Frequency Electromagnetic Waves (3 MHz to 300 GHz)

This frequency band includes **wireless communication (such as Wi-Fi and mobile signals) and microwaves**. The energy is higher, and human absorption is more concentrated on the surface layer. If you are in close contact with high-frequency electromagnetic waves for a long time, the SAR value of specific parts will be higher; especially the skin and head, which can trigger obvious thermal effects.

For example, I once heard that soldiers at a radar station of the Republic of China, out of boredom, used the microwave from the radar dome to cook a whole chicken, burning off even the feathers 🐔.

## **SAR Values of Common Devices**

### 1. Mobile Phones (800 MHz to 2.5 GHz)

**SAR value range**: about 0.1 to 1.6 W/kg.

This frequency band is the main target of SAR measurement. Because phones are used close to the head, most countries have strict limits on phone SAR values.

According to international standards, phone SAR values should not exceed 2.0 W/kg when close to the head or body (using the EU standard as an example; the US FCC standard is 1.6 W/kg).

**Note**: Most phones' SAR values are below the maximum standard, but when the signal is poor, the SAR value may approach the limit. So try to have long phone chats only where the signal is full.

### 2. Wi-Fi Routers (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)

**SAR value range**: usually around 0.1 to 0.5 W/kg (this value is based on the strength and distance of the Wi-Fi signal source, measured at close range).

Although the tissue absorption of general Wi-Fi electromagnetic waves is lower than that of phones, there is still a certain SAR value with frequent use. It is recommended to keep an appropriate distance and reduce direct proximity of the body to the Wi-Fi router.

**As distance increases, the energy density of electromagnetic waves decays rapidly with the inverse square of the distance**, so try to hide the router in a remote corner of the home.

### 3. **Microwave Ovens (2.45 GHz)**

**SAR value range**: theoretically should be 0.

Although the frequency of a microwave oven is close to Wi-Fi, its energy density is extremely high, so a metal casing (Faraday cage) is needed to prevent electromagnetic leakage.

Microwave ovens are not directly SAR-tested on the human body because they are designed with protective shielding and should not have significant electromagnetic leakage.

**General regulations require that electromagnetic leakage at 5 cm from the external surface of a microwave oven not exceed 5 mW/cm²; under normal use, the microwave oven's impact on the human body's SAR value is extremely low.**

The above examples of SAR values for several common household devices illustrate the specific absorption rates of different devices under normal conditions. Phone SAR values attract attention because they are close to the head or body, Wi-Fi router SAR values are relatively low, and microwave ovens ensure safety through casing shielding.

## **Factors Affecting SAR Values**

SAR values are affected by many factors; understanding these factors can help us use electronic devices reasonably:

### 1. Frequency

The higher the frequency, the higher the absorption rate usually is. High-frequency electromagnetic waves are more easily absorbed by the body's surface layer, but can also be shielded through technological coatings, at the cost of a higher price; low frequency penetrates deeper but has low energy.

### 2. Tissue Characteristics

Different parts of the human body have different water content, and parts with higher water content (such as the head and eyes) more easily absorb electromagnetic energy.

Therefore, when electromagnetic waves penetrate tissue with high water content, the SAR values of these parts are relatively higher and more prone to thermal effects. This is also why SAR testing of phones and wireless devices mostly targets the head, to ensure long-term use does not excessively affect sensitive areas.

When I worked at a patent firm, the back of the CRT monitor on my supervisor's desk happened to face my head, and I would feel a kind of dry heat. This led me to rearrange my desk layout soon after starting work, to avoid the direct radiation from the monitor behind me.

### 3. **Distance**

Distance is a key factor affecting SAR values. As distance increases, electromagnetic energy decreases sharply with the inverse square. Therefore, keeping an appropriate distance from devices can effectively reduce SAR values.

### 4. Usage Time

Long-term contact with high-frequency devices (such as phones or Wi-Fi) increases electromagnetic absorption. It is recommended to use them intermittently and rest appropriately to reduce long-term exposure to electromagnetic waves.

## **How to Effectively Reduce Electromagnetic Absorption**

1. Avoid being close to devices for long periods: when the signal of a phone or Wi-Fi router is poor, the device increases output power, so it is recommended to avoid long use when the signal is weak.
2. Use headphones or hands-free devices: keeping the phone away from the head during calls can significantly reduce SAR values.
3. Keep the sleep environment low-radiation: keep phones and routers away from the sleep area, or turn off unnecessary electronic devices at night.

## **Conclusion**

In a tech-driven life, electromagnetic waves are unavoidable, but properly understanding SAR values and their effects can help us use electronic products with more peace of mind.

By keeping distance and reducing exposure time, we can effectively reduce electromagnetic absorption and achieve a balance between health and convenience.

Therefore, rather than worrying excessively, it is better to manage electromagnetic exposure in life in a rational way.

Examining global livability indicators reveals severe challenges in megacities facing pollution, hyperinflation, climate vulnerability, and infrastructure deficits. Here are 10 cities with the lowest quality of life.

As globalization progresses and urbanization accelerates, the quality of life in major metropolitan centers worldwide has garnered growing attention from researchers, policymakers, and global travelers alike.

Based on global livability evaluations and socioeconomic indexes from 2023, we analyze the cities facing the most severe livability deficits, delving into the systemic structural challenges behind their rankings.

## 1. Manila, Philippines 🇵🇭

Manila struggles with persistent urban challenges, including severe population density, chronic traffic congestion, concentrated poverty, and heightened vulnerability to natural disasters such as typhoons and flooding. Additionally, economic inequality and governance hurdles complicate urban renewal efforts and strain municipal services.

## 2. Lagos, Nigeria 🇳🇬

As Nigeria's commercial powerhouse and largest metropolis, Lagos is also among the most congested and impoverished megacities. Deficits in basic infrastructure—including clean water, sewage systems, and stable power grids—compound high youth unemployment and social friction. An expanding wealth gap further heightens instability across the urban fabric.

## 3. Dhaka, Bangladesh 🇧🇩

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, ranks among the most densely populated cities on Earth. Acute air pollution, inadequate surface transport, and widespread informal settlements severely compromise the physical health and everyday well-being of its residents. Rapid unmanaged urbanization presents massive sustainability challenges.

## 4. Tehran, Iran 🇮🇷

Despite Tehran's rich cultural heritage and historical prestige, the Iranian capital suffers under intense international economic sanctions, runaway inflation, and political isolation. These macroeconomic pressures severely constrain municipal development, while intense smog and geographic confinement degrade urban livability.

## 5. Beirut, Lebanon 🇱🇧

Once celebrated as the cosmopolitan financial and cultural hub of the Levant, Beirut has endured protracted political paralysis and severe currency collapse. The devastating 2020 port explosion decimated critical infrastructure, and ongoing economic crises have severely degraded public healthcare, basic utilities, and living standards.

## 6. Caracas, Venezuela 🇻🇪

Caracas sits at the epicenter of Venezuela's prolonged socioeconomic and institutional crisis. Hyperinflation, deep poverty, critical shortages of medical supplies, and elevated crime rates make daily life an ongoing struggle for local citizens.

## 7. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam 🇻🇳

While Ho Chi Minh City enjoys dynamic industrial growth, rapid urbanization has outpaced municipal development. Severe traffic paralysis, poor air quality, localized industrial pollution, and seasonal tidal flooding increasingly impact the daily health and comfort of its population.

## 8. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 🇧🇷

Despite its world-renowned natural beauty and cultural vitality, Rio de Janeiro contends with acute social stratification, endemic violent crime, under-resourced favelas, and precarious public infrastructure. These persistent public security challenges cast a heavy shadow over urban sustainability and civilian safety.

## 9. Jakarta, Indonesia 🇮🇩

Jakarta is recognized as one of the world's most climate-vulnerable coastal capitals, threatened by excessive groundwater extraction and rapid land subsidence that places vast areas at risk of permanent sea inundation. Compounded by catastrophic vehicular gridlock and poor air quality, these existential issues have prompted national plans to relocate the administrative capital.

## 10. Colombo, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

Colombo has faced unprecedented headwinds following severe national sovereign debt defaults and political turmoil. Skyrocketing living expenses, fuel and electricity rationing, and social inequality have combined to test the resilience of urban households.

## Conclusion

The livability deficits across these major urban centers are rooted in complex, interconnected factors: political instability, macroeconomic stress, environmental degradation, climate vulnerability, and social inequality.

Understanding these multifaceted challenges is fundamental to guiding targeted international development aid, advocating for equitable policy reforms, and improving human welfare across vulnerable urban communities worldwide.

Austria's alpine regions, such as the Alps, often experience severe winters. The lowest temperature reached -52.6°C.

## **🇸🇪 Sweden: -52.6 °C**

Sweden's northern regions also have biting cold winds during the cold season. A low of -52.6°C has been recorded here.

## **🇦🇫 Afghanistan: -52.2 °C**

The Central Asian region has always given the impression of hot desert areas. But the winter in Afghanistan's high mountain regions is extremely cold, with the lowest temperature once reaching -52.2°C.

These astonishing low-temperature records from various countries and regions remind us that diverse climates exist on Earth and emphasize the importance of proper backup and preparation for extreme weather.

At the same time, they also let us appreciate the amazing power of humans and nature working together to survive. No matter where, extreme climate is always an incredible miracle and a humble reminder of the power of nature.

UK Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Grant Shapps announced a £4.3 million government investment into space-based solar power (SBSP) development projects. This ambitious undertaking aims to deploy orbital solar power stations that wirelessly beam clean electricity back down to Earth, potentially supplying up to 25% of the United Kingdom's future electricity demands.

The initiative brings together key academic and industrial leaders across the country:
- **University of Cambridge** is tasked with engineering ultra-lightweight solar cells capable of withstanding the harsh, high-radiation conditions of outer space.
- **Queen Mary University of London** will focus on high-efficiency wireless power transfer technologies to transmit space-generated electricity down to terrestrial receiving stations.
- **EDF Energy** has also joined the research effort to investigate how to seamlessly integrate this orbital energy into the existing UK national grid.

Under the conceptual design, massive orbital solar arrays will harvest solar radiation continuously, converting the electrical power into high-frequency radio waves (microwaves). These waves will be beamed across space to terrestrial receiving antennas—known as **rectennas**—where the radio frequency energy is efficiently converted back into direct current electricity. Secretary Shapps noted that solar collectors in orbit benefit from unfiltered sunlight 24 hours a day without interference from clouds, night, or atmospheric degradation, making public investment in this pioneering technology extraordinarily worthwhile.

Beyond the UK, several leading nations are accelerating their own space-based solar initiatives:
- **China** plans to deploy its first space-based solar test facility before 2028.
- The **European Space Agency (ESA)** is advancing research through its dedicated **Solaris** programme. Germany in particular has shown strong interest following energy security re-evaluations after disruptions to the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.
- In the United States, researchers at the **California Institute of Technology (Caltech)** achieved a milestone with the Space Solar Power Demonstrator (SSPD-1), successfully proving wireless energy transmission from orbit to ground detectors for the first time.

Because space-based solar arrays operate outside the atmosphere, where sunlight is neither absorbed nor scattered, they can generate up to 40 times more energy per square meter than ground-based solar panels. Operating continuously without night cycles enables true baseload renewable power. An independent report by engineering consultancy Frazer-Nash estimated that by 2040, at least one operational space solar power station could generate 800 TWh of energy annually, representing an economic scale of £21 billion and supporting approximately 143,000 jobs.

The UK government is actively seeking international partnerships to co-develop SBSP technologies, holding preliminary discussions with prospective partners including France, the United States, and Saudi Arabia.

Space-based solar power presents transformative possibilities for global energy decarbonization. As governments and private enterprises commit research and capital, this once-futuristic concept is rapidly transitioning toward commercial feasibility, opening an exciting chapter in clean energy history.

For stray dogs and cats on the street, in order to survive in the city, when foraging, if they find a bento box, they will poke their heads in through the gaps of the box to look for leftover food.

When the author was a child, I picked up a nearly one-year-old stray dog on the street. When I first found it, its neck was bound by a rubber band, and the surrounding skin was almost entirely ulcerated.

Even after taking it to an [animal hospital](https://animalan.com/tag/%e5%8b%95%e7%89%a9%e9%86%ab%e9%99%a2/) for treatment, and even though it grew up as fat as a pig, a full ring of scar where no fur could grow was always visible on its neck.

In fact, this kind of situation is all too common on the island of Taiwan.

For stray dogs and cats on the street, in order to survive in the city, when foraging, if they find a bento box, they will poke their heads in through the gaps of the box to look for leftover food.

But many people, out of ignorance or mere convenience, use the wrong way of tying the rubber band, so that when the animal pulls its head back out of the bento box, the rubber band is pulled and snaps directly around their neck. And as time passes, the rubber band gradually sinks into the skin and gets stuck in the flesh. In severe cases it can even cause serious wounds like lacerations.

What was originally a convenient little item in daily life has, through our human error, become a weapon that harms animals.

The culprit is a "rubber band" that can be seen everywhere.

When we finish a bento box and casually throw it away, we not only make the environment messy, but may also cause stray animals to have the rubber band around the box looped around their neck and strangle their throat, leaving strangulation marks, and even causing loss of life.

Out of respect for the preciousness of life, when you throw a finished bento box into the trash, do not tie the rubber band around it anymore. One habit may save a life.

The wrong (left) and correct (right) ways of tying a bento box rubber band

Please refer to the figure above. If, like a man who must find a wall to feel secure when urinating, you absolutely must tie on a rubber band, never slip it on directly (left of the figure above); instead, tie it diagonally (right of the figure above), to avoid the tragedy of "rubber band cats" and "rubber band dogs", and contribute your own effort to maintaining a friendly environment!

At 2:19 p.m. today (July 24, 2020, ROC year 109), the Taipei Weather Station (station no. 46692) under Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau recorded a temperature of 39.7°C, breaking the highest-temperature record since the station was established in 1897 during the Japanese colonial era. It is also the highest July temperature in Taipei since scientific records began, and the 17th consecutive day above 36°C, breaking multiple historical records for Taipei.

![](./109-20200724-1400-Highest-Temperature-in-Taipei-History.jpg)

High-temperature record of July 24, 2020

Although Taipei broke its own century-old high-temperature record, the Taitung Weather Station (station no. 46766) actually recorded 40.2°C the same day, only 4.2 degrees short of the highest temperature in Chinese history. Days of sweltering heat across the island have made many people begin to feel the effects of global environmental change.

The highest temperature in modern Chinese history occurred in the eighth year of the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing dynasty (1743 CE). According to modern meteorological research, the peak may have reached an astonishing 44.4°C, affecting half of mainland China, with records of abnormally hot conditions in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, and other parts of North China.

The *Gaoyi County Gazetteer* recorded: 'From the 28th day of the fifth month to the 6th day of the sixth month, the stifling heat was unbearable; even thickly shaded walls were scorching as if burned by fire; at midday lead and tin melted, and many died of thirst.' The *Tianjin County Gazetteer* also recorded the local devastation: 'In the fifth month the heat was bitter; earth and stone were scorched; gold flowed from the mastheads; many died of heat.'

Official statistics show that between July 14 and 25 in 1743, the number of people who died of heat in and around Beijing alone reached 11,400 — not counting the uncountable numbers in other vast regions.

As is well known, the Little Ice Age at the end of the Ming dynasty (1650–1700, also called the Ming–Qing Little Ice Age) caused great famines; widespread suffering plus political corruption is thought by some scholars to have indirectly accelerated the Ming's fall and replacement by the Qing.

However, research by the American Association of Geographers indicates that the coldest two periods of the Little Ice Age were actually 1660–1680 and 1850–1880, after the Ming's fall. The sixth glacial period coincided with the late Qing, a time when China also faced the Taiping Rebellion, the Hui revolts, and other uprisings, ultimately leading to the Qing's collapse and replacement by the Republic of China. This shows that the occurrence of Little Ice Ages is closely tied to the stability of Chinese regimes.

In fact, according to ancient records, China has experienced six Little Ice Ages[1], greatly affecting the climate, produce, and political situation of each dynasty, including:

1. The first cold period, from the second year of King Mu of Zhou (1000 BCE) to the eastward move of King Ping of Eastern Zhou (770 BCE) — the first Little Ice Age since China's earliest clear written records;
2. The second cold period, from the fourth year of Emperor Cheng of Western Han (29 BCE), through Eastern Han, the Three Kingdoms, Jin, and the Northern and Southern Dynasties, to the twentieth year of Emperor Wen of Sui (1000 CE) — the second Little Ice Age;
3. The third cold period, from the second year of Emperor Taizong of the early Northern Song (1192 CE) — the third Little Ice Age;
4. The fourth cold period, from the first year of Emperor Taizu of Ming (1458 CE) to the sixth year of Emperor Dezong of Qing (1880 CE). Within this more than five-hundred-year fourth cold period, three Little Ice Ages appeared:

From the second year of Emperor Yingzong of the mid-Ming (1458 CE) to the thirty-first year of Emperor Shizong of Ming (1552 CE) — the fourth Little Ice Age in Chinese history.
5. From the twenty-eighth year of Emperor Shenzong of the late Ming (1600 CE) to the fifty-ninth year of Emperor Shengzu of Qing (1720 CE) — the fifth Little Ice Age in Chinese history.
6. From the twentieth year of Emperor Xuanzong of the late Qing (1840 CE) to the sixth year of Emperor Dezong of Qing (1880 CE) — the sixth Little Ice Age, the one closest to our own era.

In 2015, a report titled 'Scientists Say the Sun Will Sleep in 2030 and Earth Will Enter a Little Ice Age' sparked widespread discussion. At the National Astronomy Meeting held by the Royal Astronomical Society in the UK, Professor Valentina Zharkova[2] and her team presented a new model of solar activity cycles, suggesting that the solar cycle might enter a brief dormant state in 2030, with solar activity expected to drop by about 60%, causing Earth's temperature to fall sharply — meaning Earth would enter another Little Ice Age.

Although scientists from various countries came forward at the time to clarify that the report was alarmist, treating a research hypothesis as a certainty and causing public panic.

Yet given the past six Little Ice Ages — and the fact that it is unknown whether even the fourth cold period has ended — it is not impossible for a Little Ice Age to occur now. Although natural disasters remain a mysterious realm beyond human prediction, there are always signs to follow.

In recent years, weather anomalies have gradually intensified, with locust plagues, floods, rat plagues, and epidemics reported frequently — always coinciding with historical events. And as we learned earlier in this article, even during the transitional periods between two Little Ice Ages, a historical high of 44.4°C could occur. So today's 39.7°C in Taipei seems hardly surprising.

As autumn and winter arrive, ants invading homes is a pest problem that shows up almost once every year or two. Compared with cockroaches and termites, I do not have much prejudice against insects like ants; if I see them outdoors I will even squat down and quietly observe their hard-working figures. But once they invade indoors and cause property damage, naturally they can only be exterminated.

This time a colony of ants appeared in the kitchen at my hometown, so I specially bought ant-killing medicine online to use. I had used it once in a dormitory during my student days, and the feeling of wiping out an entire nest directly was actually quite satisfying.

> On weekend nights during my university years, we would always find a movie to watch in the dormitory. I remember one time after turning off the lights, watching the movie, drinking beer, and snacking on Northern Sea codfish strips, after a while I suddenly felt my hand itching, as if something had crawled on it. When I turned on the light, what a sight — the whole bag of strips was crawling with ants. That was a scene more terrifying than a horror movie!

I had used granular ant bait before, and also bought boric acid at the pharmacy (not borax, which is used for meatballs) to mix my own insecticide, and both successfully wiped out entire ant nests.

Below is the first use of Youpin Ant-Exterminating Gel. Its ant-attracting effect is indeed outstanding; it did not take long before ants came into direct contact, and then a large number of ants were drawn in to start enjoying it.

![](./Youpin-Ants-eat-Anticide-ant-medicine-Insecticide.jpg)

Below is a video record of the ants peacefully enjoying the ant bait. You can see them all huddled beside the pink gel (with boric acid as the main ingredient), happily enjoying the feast I carefully prepared for them. Some who could not squeeze into a good spot wandered around like idle ants, refusing to leave.

https://youtu.be/dlQVj9XIN8w

However, this time the gel-type ant bait "Youpin Ant-Exterminating Gel" did not seem to have the insecticidal effect I expected; it could even be said to be somewhat disappointing. Because I found that not only did this group of ants fail to have their nest destroyed, there even seemed to be more and more of them.

The instructions say that the entire ant colony can be wiped out within one to two weeks after baiting. But when I checked my platform order, I found that I purchased it on November 25, 2019 and started baiting within two or three days, yet as of today (January 2, 2020) the situation is that more and more ants are coming out to feed!

There was even another batch of ants appearing along a new route, making me suspect that this jar of medicine is simply a nutritional supplement — not only fattening the ants but even causing them to split into separate colonies.

![](./Ant-medicine-Anticide-02.jpg)

To avoid dragging things out, I had to temporarily remove the Youpin Ant-Exterminating Gel and buy another brand's boxed ant bait insecticide. As for its insecticidal effect, I will tell everyone next time.

At present, within two days after baiting, I do not seem to see the amazing effect of the whole group of ants surrounding the medicine as before. I do not know whether the gel they ate earlier has already taken effect, or whether the ant colony is simply not interested in the new ant bait and has gone off to look for other food.

Another point worth mentioning: when I first applied the gel, the initial amount was only about three centimeters long. Perhaps too little bait also affects the insecticidal effect, and may even be the cause of the colony splitting. Anyone interested can look into this.

## Product Features of Youpin Ant-Exterminating Gel

- The attractant of this product is in gel form, convenient for ants to feed on, even smaller ants can feed easily.
- A boric acid formulation mixed with an attractant formula into an easy-to-eat gel; worker ants carry it back to the nest after feeding and feed it to larvae, which then gradually die of dehydration in about two to five days.
- Effective against both omnivorous and sweet-eating ants.
- The gel bait can be placed wherever ants appear, or a small piece of cardboard can be cut and placed on top for comprehensive ant elimination.
- Country of origin: Taiwan.
- Powerful ant attractant. Chain extermination. Mass feeding.
